Been debating how to review this one for a while because every time I come up with a description I think to myself "That sounds absolutely ludicrous and no one is going to agree with it."

Taking that into consideration, I also can't come up with any better analogies, so these are going to have to do.

This is a techno set, it isn't tech house, it isn't prog, it's straight up techno spun by a kid who works harder behind the decks than almost any other live DJ I have ever seen (sans maybe Ben Sims), anyone who has seen Mathias play can attest to that.

That being said, I would describe this set as containing three parts, one that feels like tech house, one that feels like proper "minimal" techno (at least as it's understood these days) that has some eerily prog elements in it, and a "new" techno section. Each is very distinct, and the way each is moved between works very, very well.

A prime example of the first idea I was trying to get at is "Hispaniola" - the bubbly bassline is really indicative of the kind of laid back groove the first half has, the kind of stuff I want to hear at sunset when I'm relaxing with a drink. By around the Houle tune (which is very much "in the mix"), we're clearly into a bit drummier, yet stripped down minimal techno section that is more about quick transitions and flow between small parts of tunes than tunes on the whole, by the time you hit Brian Kage through "Maria" you've got basically a full on, lush, proggy feeling techno going on and everything feels like it just built from point A to point B perfectly.

All in all, the set is nothing but techno, and nothing if not a perfect representation of Mathias abilities and range as a live DJ. There's a reason I've tried to learn all I can from this kid, and it's a ing crying shame he isn't playing the time slots he should be.

The people jizzing over Luciano's fabric tracklist should check this one. thats beef!

Mathias played "Maria" in Detroit and I instantly knew it, but couldn't ID it for the life of me - it was the only thing that lifted me off the couch in the basement of Bleu early on, and solely because I needed the ID so I could remember to dig it out again myself.

So much ing fun to mix it should be illegal.

Honestly I really don’t know what to say other then thank you. What you described is the exact vision that I had in mind. The different parts of the set and how everything is laid out is exactly how it i envisioned it but probably couldn't put into words as good as you did. I greatly appreciate the kind words and the analysis of the set. That made my day, week and month.

Well in theory the mini set you heard was just messing around and your ass should have been the one playing. All my gems and time was being saved for later in the night. Maria is all sorts of win though for sure.

I will consume this on the way to work after a breakfast bowl tomorrow.

Seriously hawt looking tracklist, I haven't heard several of those.

But if it sucks I'm throwing a water bottle at you.

Mathias - is the single-file mp3 ever going to be uploaded? i was hoping to just be able to throw that one on my iPod because i hate having sets that are separated out track by track (too much clutter).

or does Rob have the CD? i forgot to grab a CD from you in Detroit but i need it before i leave for NY tomorrow!

I have it but I've been too lazy and scattered to ask you how to rip it in whatever program that is you have to turn it into one file.

I'll give it to you tonight and you can take care of it. :)

PS: Mathias was never going to have an answer to that question - he's Mr. "I have some random promoter chick print my CD's for me so I don't even have the file anymore, suck it dolphins!" :p
