I'm finding that it takes me too long to work out sounds when id rather be writing music, on the other hand I don't want to get reliant on presets.
Ends up I'm doing about 50/50 original work vs presets.
Curious as to how common this is and thoughts on sticking to presets? |

| I think that is pretty common. I for myself use lots of presets most of the time (I am just a hobbyist). Last weekend I attended a workshop with Dominik de Leon (DuMonde) on clubmusic-production and he also used mostly presets (even Nexus) and just changed filter and envelope a little. I guess if you use lot's of automation (which is the most important way to make sounds interesting in EDM) it doesn't really matter that you use presets, that's what they're for at least. |

| Ofcourse you can use presets. As hereander says, thats what they're there for. The sound of an acoustic guitar, or el-guitar for that matter, will always be pretty much the same. And what I mean by that is, when making music, its not always about inventing new types of sounds. Whats really important is the composition. |

Yeah I use a combination of presets (which i then modify) and create sounds from scratch. If you are highly skilled in synthesis and can create whatever sound you desire from scratch then obviously thats the best position to be in, but if not then there is no point spending ages trying to create "that sound" therefore killing all your compositional creativity in the process.
I do believe that in the long run though, it is still very beneficial to try doing your own sounds from scratch where possible. I often find I can modulate and automate sounds I've done myself far better than presets as I understand what every setting is contributing towards that sound.
Improving your own synthesis skills will also help you get the most out of the synths you have rather than getting bogged down, forever looking for other synths with different presets. |

NP using presets, like to strip the effects off tho.
Add my own later.
Creating your own can come up with some sikkk stuff.
I'm not that great at sound engineering so uasilly start with a preset and modulate/automate it to get what i think i want.
It's fun building your own soundz. |

| If you are browsing through presets on a set of notes, not knowing what you are looking for, you can often end up with something original. |

Do you even understand what that phrase means?
A wheel is perfect for its intended purpose. Any attempt to remake it with some slight differences or remake it using an entirely different concept is going to be an exercise in futility because it cant be as effective as the wheel.
How does that relate to using presets? Are you suggesting that the presets on a synth perfectly encapsulate all that it can possibly do and represents the best sounds you can ever get out of it? i.e. programming it yourself is going to be futile because you can't possibly make sounds better than the presets?
Thats a completely retarded thing to suggest even ironically or in jest. |

Dude - calm down and take a deep breath. It was only a simple analogy. No one was harmed and nobody (but you) had any problem comprehending the underlying point. Geez - a little sensitive, aren't we?

Yes, do you?
I'm not even going to bother with the rest. |

| Modifying presets is the only way. |
