As a 13 year old, JOOP recalls making his way into the world of being a DJ at a local community centre. Teaching himself how to mix, using the legendary Technics turntables he fell in love with the idea of presenting to an audience and since his early teens, has never looked back. At 16, his Amiga came into play and he spent the next 10 years fiddling with genres, deciding where he wanted to devote his energies. “I came across this whole other style called house and from this point on the music evolved too. I was influenced by more music and a lot of different genres of electronic music were born. This includes trance and that’s what I’m playing today with my own twist of course. I like to add techno, progressive or even minimal to my sets.”

Hailing from the Dutch colony of Holland, it would be remiss to merely associate him with tulips, windmills and clogs. “Sure it is a very small country! You can drive from north to south in 4 hours! But the dance culture is one of the best in the world and that means music-wise as well as events! Holland is definitely an Olympic winner when it comes down to putting a mega event on the map! I think in the past, many countries took a good look at what Holland accomplished on events and tried this in their countries. This has kept the scene alive and as a DJ, it gives you the opportunity to visit places you could only dream of. For example last Friday I was in Shenzhen, China and met a guy that was the owner of a beautiful restaurant near the harbour with amazing scenery and we ate real Chinese cuisine. I love what I do!”

Of course that doesn’t preclude him for doing what he does well, err, as well. His feels his music must evolve and challenge you. It must come from the heart and give you shivers down your spine. Good music must be, simply good music. And to this end, his inspirations, influences and heroes are some of the biggest names in dance music. “My real inspiration is mister Sven Väth! What has Sven got to do with trance? Well everything. The way this guy plays his stuff and interacts with his audience is just fantastic. As I said before I like all kinds of genres of electronic music, even the more minimal stuff like John Acquaviva, Daso and DNox and Beckers can make my day! So even outside the trance scene I can enjoy a lot of genres and artists. I admire Tiësto for what he accomplished and also as an artist. He’s doing a real good job and still is in control with all the things he does.”

In the studio, he has been busy plugging away. “I did a follow up for The Future and I think this new track is definitely a worthy follow up to The Future. Another track is called JOOP-3008 and will contain some very cool remixes from people I love to work with. I also finished a remix for Santinago Nino on DJ Preach’s label Relic. Besides this, I’m working on a few things together with Geert Huinink as well. For the people who don’t know his name or what he does, he did some things for the latest Armin Only concert in The Jaarbeurs, Utrecht. He has also produced alongside Tiësto as well.”

Likewise, JOOP sees his studio time as an opportunity to try and grow and take things further and further. “I really want to do an artist album in the near future and I hope to get this started at the beginning of 2009. But for now you will find some interesting releases which will be available on High Contrast. The first release will be out in August and I am in collaboration with Leon Bolier called Hold On.” And as for the tour, expect nothing less than the best. “I will try to play as good as it can get. I’ve got loads of good tunes to make people go nutty on the dancefloor and I will leave your country with a JOOP mark!” That sounds ominous now, doesn’t it?

Joop (NED) plays 3D @ CBD on Friday July 4.
