LOL Denim world.

Spose to answer your Q, prob Belfast 6 1999. Always wore plain denim ones tho., found them most "stylish" at the time.

Speaking of stylish....the blue wizard jacket was a hit.

JOOP INTERVIEW

Many people are bored by purist trance, yet some artists (Sean Tyas for example), feel trance went through a slump when it became less anthemic and melody driven. How do you see it?

First of all thanks for having me in this interview.
I think that people don’t give me the stamp of a “trance dj” anyway. I already changed my style 4 or 5 years ago by adding a lot more interesting styles of electronic music to my dj sets and not only use the sound “trance”. I think when you are doing a dj set on a trance party ( and I do that a lot ;) it is boring to listen for like 2 hours straight only to pure trance music and that is my opinion as a “trance” dj. This is why I love to make steps during my dj sets thinking outside the “box”. Of course you have an audience that only loves trance music and would like to hear that typical sound of trance, but I experienced by travelling around the globe and doing a lot of party’s, as well the big ones and smaller ones, that it makes no difference. Because if you feel the audience and deliver a hell of a good dj set and mix this up with different styles they will absolutely love it! Don’t get me wrong I am still a big trance lover in the heart, but as a DJ I find myself having more fun also then playing only “that” particular style of music. About trance going trough a slump…well that all depends on the producers around making trance music. My opinion is that when I make tunes I try to do things which are not already done. I don’t copy other tracks or change melodies from other existing tracks. I want to create a sound that when a DJ play my track, people definitely can recognize it and know that it’s mine.

Tell us about your new ‘Hold On’ release with Leon Bolier. What’s he like to work with?

O yes!....Hold On is a tune that is very special to me. After I did Sonsuz on the ID&T record label I never did a real vocal track again. When Leon and I finished this track we felt like this track needs vocals. I started some digging and send Raz an e-mail about making some lyrics for this track. Raz is the man behind many vocal tracks like Armin van Buuren – The Sound Of Goodbye or Ernesto vs Bastian – Darkside Of The Moon. I really love Cosmic Gate feat. Denise Rivera - Body Of Conflict, because the female vocals on this one are so beautiful. So I wanted to know who this Denise Rivera was. After calling with Raz we worked out an idea. The funny thing is, it turned out that Denise lived almost around the corner from where I’m from. She lives in the same city where I live. Things couldn’t be better. Leon is a very cool guy and honest person and after “The Future” we kept contact and visited each other a lot. We still do a lot together and things are really hitting off in the studio. So prepare yourself for a lot of floor damage to come!.
JOOP & Leon Bolier feat. Denise Rivera – Hold On (High Contrast Recordings) will be released in August.

What else is coming up production wise?

At the moment I have a couple of tracks finished. I did a follow up for The Future. Of course we had Prominent/ On Top Of Things on the High Contrast label, but I think this new track is definitely a worthy follow up to The Future. It contains a real catchy melody and has some real good atmospheres going around in the track. The track is called JOOP-3008 and will contain some very cool remixes from people I love to work with. I can tell you this release will not be your normal remix package!. And next to this I am doing a few things at the moment with Geert Huinink as well. This guy is probably one of the few that takes his music and studio as serious as it gets. For the people who don’t know his name or what he does, he did some things for the latest Armin Only in The Jaarbeurs Utrecht The Netherlands. He produced along side Tiësto some things as well. So this is what currently keeps me busy in my life and I hope that this will take me to a higher level from where I am right now. For me it is constantly trying to grow and getting a step further.

Some have said Tiësto is pushing trance too far into the pop realm with his Elements of Life concert. What do you think of his evolvement as an artist?

There is for me nothing much to say I guess. For me Tiësto is a hell of a good artist and performer. He accomplished everything what others dream of. I’ve been around for 14 years in this industry of dance music and never saw something like what he has become or what he does. In this world of people it doesn’t matter what you will accomplish, because if your good and put your mind to it you will achieve your goals. After a while you will always have people that will disagree in what you do or what you are. So I think Tiësto is exploring what he can still do to keep it interesting for the world. Because if you almost achieve everything there is to achieve then it will be harder and harder to keep up with what he really love the most….dj-ing and music. So for me he is truly a great artist and performer and a huge example for me. So whatever he will do music-wise or putting trance to another level it is all fine with me. Just keep in mind if your headlining your own Elements of Life tour there is more that reach the eye then playing a few records/cd’s on an event on that scale!

Dance scribes recently touted Romania to be “the new Ibiza” – do you agree? If not, what is the most exciting new place for you to play?

Well as strange as it sounds my first appearance in Romania will be this summer after touring in your beautiful country. I will be playing on a parade something like I did several times in Berlin during the Love Parade. So ask me this after my booking there. About the most exciting new place to play for me I’m not sure. There are a lot of very special places in the world to play or do a show. I can tell you that Lebanon or Poland, China and even the US are really cool places to jam out for a dj at the moment.

Tell us about something you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I would like to say that this would be listening to music and working around the house makes me happy. I love to spend a lot of time making things pretty or thinking of ways to invent some cool stuff like making lamps or designing stuff on the spot. Then when I really can bring something to life after this was only in my head then I am really satisfied. While I am doing this I love to listen to music like Within Temptation or Metallica and of course some good electronic music. This can be almost everything except house or hardcore. I can enjoy real minimal or good ruff techno and of course a good “trance” CD will make my day all good.

Thanks

Thank you for having me!
