Yeah I was thinking about this. Maybe 200 insurance 400 car payment, 400 gas. Mind you I dont own a car so these are just guesstimates.

However, I would like to hear some real numbers from you car owners/leasers out there.

I am guessing it ranges from 600-1000+ a month. Gas alone is expensive as hell now-a-days

I own a car but am nowhere close to $1,000/month - mainly because the car was given to me for another and I live in Ajax and am still on my mom's dirt cheap insurance :)

Some of my friends have their own car and pay some minimum rate of $93 per month for insurance

and if you buy a cheap car or have one given to you, then a car will definitely cost far less than 1000/month

but even having a cheap car would still be way more costly than a TTC pass, however, the TTC is not always sufficient depending on where you live

My buddy sent me the link this morning..and I gotta say, I'm very impressed with the new look and layout. Alot cleaner, easy to navigate, and doesn't have all those retarded banners, logos, images on the main page like their current site. Their current site's main image at the top that says Toronto Transit Commission, is all pixelated and just really bad quality, not too mention confusing and not easy to navigate through.

The only thing I would've hoped for is that they included patterns/colors of existing stations and incorporate them somehow into either background images or gradients, in one form or another.

In the end, anything would be better than what they currently have.

on another forum i go to, a person suggested putting up "official" wallpaper, ringtones, etc with the TTC logos, station and so on. that could definitely give the TTC that personal/unique touch.

i really like the way the route and schedules are set up. really easy and quick to find. the picture of each station is also a nice touch, however, they should make it expand when you click on it.

i agree with that, i mean i do like the way they have it color co-ordinated in conjunction with the current TTC lines, but alot of the older stations have unique colors/patterns to them and it would've been nice to have them included in the new site somehow. :)

i also like the way it's easy to find the routes/schedules & bus maps.

another thing would be to ensure that they're using the TTC's font throughout their site. i really like their font.

agreed
I kept clicking on them hoping I'd get a wallpaper sized photo of the station

I can understand if the system is cash strapped, but c'mon not updating your website for 10 YEARS?! The current site was made in 1998 and hasn't undergone a major facelift until now. There's no question that one was needed and it's a very welcome upgrade, but talk about being WAY past due.

Let's hope that it doesn't take us another 10 years to catch up to the rest of North America, let alone the world by including a trip planner and real time GPS service trackers..

quote:

With new easy-to-read graphics and search engines for bus and streetcar routes, it nevertheless doesn't yet have a trip planning tool or up-to-the-minute service updates for the system.

Those features, along with an e-commerce function, will be added by next year, said the TTC's marketing manager Alice Smith.

Eventually the TTC's site will function like the Chicago transit system's where users can actually watch the buses and see delays, said commission chair Adam Giambrone.

the addition of GPS units on all surface busses and streetcars will really help with this. same with next bus/streetcar/subway arrival displays at stops.

Car payment, insurance and gas = around $500-600 a month.

However,

#1 I actually own something and i can sell it at a later date if i want

#2 Time is money and it takes me a quarter of the time to get somewhere unless my origin and destination both happen to be along yonge st.

#3 i can use it any time of day

#4 it will take me further than the toronto city limits

#5 it's driver wont yell at me for playing my music too loud

:)

jay .. sometimes I think only you could turn a thread about a website's redesign into a debate between owning a car vs. taking the transit.
