i hope you're not suprised.

wow that's SUCH an improvement on the current site. awesome.

Now if only weekly and monthly passes can start from the date of purchase and credit card machines were available at more locations... now that'd be sweet.

how much would you charge to redesign their site? apparently the TTC spent $8 million dollars... taxpayers money well spent?

TTCgets new Web site after 10 years
Allison Hanes , National Post
Published: Friday, June 06, 2008

After a decade of use and years of complaints, the Toronto Transit Commission yesterday rolled out a brand new Web site that will soon offer passengers such bells and whistles as text message alerts about their preferred routes and live reports on the progress of the next streetcar.

A preview of the new hub for TTC information went live yesterday and will gradually assume all traffic in the coming weeks and months.

This is the first overhaul since the site was introduced in 1998 and was largely driven by riders, who mobilized in cyberspace under the auspices of popular Toronto blogs, among others Torontoist and Spacing Toronto, and at the start of the year challenged the TTC to bring its online portal into the 21st century.

The new model is a stark departure from the old clunker, which resembled a jumble of banner ads and drop down menus and was criticized as confusing, complicated, ugly and difficult to navigate.

Councillor Adam Giambrone (Davenport), the TTC chairman, said the entire project -- including all the features, technology, consultation and expertise that when into the redesign -- cost about $8-million, with the site itself consuming about $400,000 of that amount.

"The TTC web site is a critical piece of infrastructure," Mr. Giambrone stated of the 12 million hits it currently gets each year.

The new Web site can currently be accessed via the old at www.toronto.ca/ttc,but eventually will assume the domain name: www.ttc.ca.

oh and among other news..

quote:

TTC transit heads up (6:50am):
Two streetcars collided at Bay & Dundas this morning, injuring a number of people and prompting road closure while the streetcars are put back on the tracks and removed. Because pigs don't fly and because $400,000 doesn't buy much these days, you'll find no timely info about any of this on ttc.ca or the new beta.ttc.ca websites.
UPDATE (8:10am): at about 8am ttc.ca posted an alert on their front page. Way to go! :)
UPDATE (8:30am): CBC Radio1 says the streets were reopened just after 8am, rendering the TTC's update kind of... uh... useless. It's been removed in a timely fashion.

lol what a joke .. $400,000 well spent?

Looks like they made it in Drupal or something.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the system map. It seems to require you to know if you are traveling by subway, bus or streetcar ahead of time. Did I miss something?

nope you didn't miss anything.

"We are working on several other TTC maps which will be made available soon. "

i don't see why they couldn't have just put up the old map in the mean time. looking for routes that go in a certain area is gonna be a pain in the ass for everyone.

I'm not a big fan of Drupal or any other CMS for that matter. They are convenient, but not worth all the hassle they create.

THAT'S what they spent $8 million on?

Get me a graphic designer and one or two code monkeys and I can have that done in under a month.

Edit: Forget the code monkeys, there aren't even any scripts or applications... two weeks and maybe a $5K contract would get you that, just have to write the content.

ugly.

You must be joking. I could have made something more efficient in Geocities or Angelfire, back in the day.
