Web hosting... UK vs abroad

I'm going to move my hosting soon, basically because I've got a reseller account and don't need it anymore, plus the company I'm with are a little bit pony.
I need upwards of 100 GB of bandwidth each month, which is really expensive in the UK. There are "unlimited" bandwidth packages, but all that really means is they'll cap it as and when they like and decide that you were breaching their fair use policy, which tends to happen well before 100 gigs.
So I've been toying with the idea of getting some hosting abroad, either in Europe or the US as it's much cheaper, but accessing a server in Europe or the US from the UK will generally be slower than accessing a server in the UK.
Does anyone know just how much of a difference it's likely to make having a server outside the UK, or have any suggestions of decent, fast hosting companies outside the UK (as a fast server abroad will obviously help with the speed issue if at least that's not a bottleneck)? |

| Host it here in the US. You can get 1TB of bandwidth for a cheap price. Especially with your exchange rate. |

| I'd agree that UK based ones are bad, almost a bit flaccid, you see this really good looking deal but when you actually get there, it's a big let down, as you say, it'd never get close to the 100gb advertised, or if it did so would do so at speeds that'd have people thinking "is it there yet" on your downloads. Make use of ones from USA or somewhere like sweden. |

I've been using surpasshosting for 4 years now, no complaints at all :)
At £3 a month it's a steal! |

But what is your monthly bandwidth allowance? If it is less than 100gb/month then it is worthless to him. |

Looks good, seems to tick all of the boxes of what I'm after.
If you're getting decent speeds from them, then maybe it isn't such a big issue being abroad - just pinged their server and did a speed test and it seems to be about the same as the other hosting companies I've been looking at in the States.
Nice one :) |

As in set up my own server at home? No chance in the UK - with ASDL everywhere you'd need a pretty serious ISP to have any reasonable upload speed to be able to handle even 1 person trying to view your site! |

| Check out Dreamhost as well. |

What is the site gonna be hosting that you reckon you'll have 100% utilization?
Obviously on ADSL you're gonna have lower download rates than upload but thats nothing to do with the actual line, thats to do with the subscription you have.
EDIT:
>A ISP giving 2.5M upload speeds for about £20 a month.< Or twice your month cap in a day (theoretically, but really...). |
