My dad joined because he was bored (yes my dad was in the US Airforce, not the Canadian lol-force) and he had a great career. Flew a few missions, then when he didn't feel like flying planes anymore he decided to go back to school and I guess they must have liked him because they paid for his College and only asked for a few more years of service. (He became an accountant, pretty f'ing lame but he makes good money).

Didn't take him long to reach Captain either, I think that's the rank he retired under but I'm not sure, I got bored of his stories like 10 years ago, but he DID enjoy himself and still has friends in the service and others that have retired that he still talks to often.

Props to your dad (that could be a pilot joke!) but joining the military in time of war because you can't think of anything else to do is madness. There's a lot of good reasons, but that logic is flawed.

Ask you 'rents, your best friends, your priest (or whatev's), but does the CoR seem like the best place to get life altering (and potentially life threatening) advice?

Dr. Das, you're right, the time of war thing is a huge factor.

Krypton, join once Obama gets elected :gsmile:
Warble
Screw the Military!

Join a Cult, much better percs.

Air Force personnel are only in combat roles if they are pilots or some clandestine commando unit. The Air Force has a huge specialization in information technology. Satellites, nuclear missiles, intelligence. None of that is a combat role. And of course, the huge bureaucracy the Air Force is. If I join now, I'de probably be assigned to a desk job. Not serving in a war zone. If I want that, I'de join the army. I think the ROTC would be a better route. That way I can stay a full-time student and wait a few years on the actual job. By that time Alex, Obama will be in office..:p

****! I'm no private! Been in 4 years, gotten promoted 3 times, was in Japan for two years and deployed to the Philippines. Got a good conduct medal, certificate of commendation, two letters of appreciation, currently the night crew supervisor. completed all my schools for my job which makes me a super tech, i'm a CDI (collateral duty inspector) which is QA (Quality Insurance) so no one dies when a bird is flying.

Hows the weather over there nugget? I mean sir.

You didn't get the "I got kicked out because someone posted racy pictures in a thread on TA and they found it on my PC cache" medal?
Chris Crossland
Join the Marine Corps, sure it's hard but you become the best. We make fun of all the other branches cause we can. Living of course is worse than the Air Force, but it just makes you harder so you can deal with other crap with no problems. Why settle for less? You dont see any other service guarding the president, or embassies.

One of the happiest days of my life was completing bootcamp. That is a huge feat. It sucks ass but makes you a better person. Your confidence goes up your in top shop shape. I was on top of the world. Im sure the other branches would say that untill they actually see marines. They envy us. Almost all the navy guys i talked to said they wanted to be a marine.

I was stationed on a navy base for school, i was almost the only Marine on that base. Everyone was looking at me, i got a whole load of respect from people.

Just go in the air wing man sure we still deploy but you're not on the lines. Thats what alot of people dont get. I would be safer in iraq right now than i am here. More Marines die in car accidents here in the states than the front lines of the infantry, and thats infantry Air wingers never leave the base. Dude just PM i'll tell you everything i was never told by my recruiter the good and the bad.

i know you think you are an expert on this subject, what with eerything either 1) recruiters have told you; 2) what you've read online; or 3) what your family/friends have told you....

but coming from someone who is actually in today's AF, you're statements are wrong.

granted, the AF is not all huah like the army/marines, you will still deploy...regardless of what your AFSC is.
