I got a serious question, maybe you can help me out.

My cousins have always been baby makers, well one of them has a 7th grade son thats pretty sharp. Thing is he is trying to be "gangster" like his pops and is already ing off in school and doing stupid .

Now is there anything i can do?

He REALLY looks up to me and does take into hand my advice, but what can i actually do to steer him in the right direction. I don't want to see him go into HS and then end up at a continuation school and then not even graduate like MOST of my family. :(

i don't think you need a school teacher to tell you how to do it. no disrespect to gypsygirl.

why not ask him what his interests are and what he wants to be in the future. try to get him out of his circle of friends, which i'm sure is influencing his way of thinking. get him real busy.

or why not let him listen to house music and maybe he'll consider producing tracks during his spare time and not just hang out with friends at the mall.

good luck!

:) :) :)

good for you :) i know educators do this for the love of it because there's no real money to make unless you're in the university doing research.

aww just got back, rode all the roller coasters except ghost rider, it was closed. one of my homeroom students was like ms. barry i saved you a seat on the bus so up there and back we shared his i-pod and talked music the whole time.

and lol at bas, yeah, it's pretty funny to see some of our students sneaking off trying get "romantic", we love busting them! or heckling them while in line or riding the rides. it's fun though and they see us outside of the classroom in a different setting as "real" people and the interaction is almost always pleasant.

yes, 8th graders can be a real challenge but they are still at an age where they care about doing well, for the most part, and care about their teachers and can still be steered in the right direction. there is still that spark that can be ignited and there is still hope! again for most of them :)

as for neurologic, i would agree with what gerard said, see what his interest are, but also being there and in his life and living a positive life for him to model after is so very important too!!! often times children feel they can't be more successful or better than what their parents are/were, as if they don't deserve it or they might offend their parents if they do better than them, i don't know, i've taught now for 11 years so i've seen alot but anyways, i've seen a ton of cases like that. but be that positive influence and don't give up on him!!!

oh well, done tomorrow at 11 am and then off to the staff year end party and tons of cocktails :) teachers love to drink and the school supplies it!!!! can't beat that

yeah i know.

I already am helping him out, and my cousin. I do take him out here and there and i do try to break the mold he is trying to get at. But it wouldn't hurt to get some insight from someone who deals with kinds like this day in day out ;)

Its kinda like when your sick; sure u can google it and get an idea, but why not ask a doctor?
