Well it sounds like "of" because it's a contraction of could + have = could've.

And yes, people who type it are either FOBS or morons. Seriously. All my FOB friends say "of".

I have two pet hates:

1. When people say "then", rather than "than".

2. When people say "I could care less", rather than "I couldn't care less". ITS THE COMPLETE ING OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU INTEND TO SAY, YOU RETARDS!

Funnily, even smart people seem to do #1, such as my friend who's doing hardcore engineering at uni. Americans seem to do #2 more often than anyone else.

Bad grammar makes me want to myself and die.

Typos are one thing - it is an entirely different set of problems if someone is actually unable to identify the correct syntactical function of there/they're/their and use it in a sentence properly.

FOBs are excused. Canucks and Yanks are not.

RE: the OP

"of" is a preposition used in conjunction with nouns or pronouns, usually to form an adjectival expression or to indicate space, appearance, distance, possession etc.

"have" is a verb. period.

"would of" is one of my biggest pet peeves!!!! :whip:
