Most of the time, when people refer to syncopation, they're referring to the offbeat variety. That's when the accent isn't on any of the the 1/2/3/4 beats but somewhere in between (and if you don't know what an accent is, stop making music right now).

Of course the syncopation doesn't have to be a full beat. You could have faster syncopation between every 8th note instead. The point is that the accents aren't where the time signature dictates they ought to be.

Contrary to what some people are saying, it is not simply something that's rhythmically "unexpected". That's quite possibly the worst definition I've ever heard. :p Yes it does involve something "unexpected", but that specifically applies in the context of a strong accent occurring on a weak beat or rhythmic division.

Quitted.

I didn't exactly mean quit forever, just, take a break and study rhythm for a bit.

And seriously, samples people? Come on! Even the oompaloompa bass is a type of syncopation. Some type of syncopation is in almost every track you ever heard.

lol u confuse me more and more. then syncopation isnt anything realy, just drums or rhytms of some sort? i dont mind as long as it sounds cool, i thought i knew what it was but obviously not.

I dunno from seeing people discuss it before, it just looked like something that was essential that i was missing lol. Now I think its always involved whether we realize it or not? I.e. the offbeat bass? lol
