Hi, I've been browsing around the forum and searching previous posts and I can't find anything regarding syncopation. I tried wikipedia and I got a general idea, but I'm curious if anyone can give a synopsis of it in relation to electronic dance music production? And beyond just what it is, how have you used it in your tracks? The reason I ask is that every now and then the word pops up in a context of utmost importance lol, and I feel like it's something good to have explained more in depth. Thanks!

Then you proably didn't understand it.
You don't have to understand it to use it. It's just a name. |

Alright, I'll try and take that perspective then. Thanks!

Think of syncopation as notes that you don't expect. Take a standard off beat open hihat pattern. If you take the 4th hihat in the loop and split it up into two, moving one of them forward a 16th and the other one backward a 16th. That's syncopation.

exactly right, its just something unexpected really. it doesnt have to be a change of the drums, it can often just be a mute here and there. i find it sounding funny to mute the kick once or twice in the track at the first kick in a bar/section whatever.

Alright, i'm starting to see the connection lol. I'm gonna think about this when arranging progressions in my tracks.

u should be very carefull with it tho caus most people dont understand stuff like that. they will say "what was that?" and "the cd skipped", like that.

it's pretty much used just as a subtle variation here and there right?

if it should be any point at all to the masses and not just elitist listeners it shouldnt by subtle, it should be clear, in your face so that everyone realy understand its on purpose and not sound just like u lost some midiwords. imo tho
