in that case, you should become a police officer. those are the real bastards that get picked on and then like to inflict their childhood suffering on society. ;) |

yeah, that's my point. "21 percent of people that describe themselves as vegeterians love eating meat"
so basically what we've got is a bunch of idiots. |

Yes. I've been wondering what to take away from it. Most of it was already known, but what does it mean? Thats really anybody's guess and the kind of open ended question cable news pundits love because they can talk for hours about it and there's no wrong answer.
A lot of the articles have been taking your stance that American's have contradicting ideas about what they believe. Such as this title from SF Chronicle:
Study finds contradictions among Americans' religious beliefs
I think it shows most people feel they can pick and choose what they believe. They may be religiously devoted but choose to believe everyone goes to heaven even if they don't believe in jesus because their heathen neighbors are just so darn nice.
I liked NY Times that took the approach it is more confirmation American society is leaning increasingly liberal and accepting.

Maybe they think atheism is just not following a religion. Go figure.
Anyway, this is hardly surprising. Europe is a lot less religious than the US and this is their current figures:

As I recall it, more about 85% of the Brazilian population believes in God... I'm used to being a minority though :p |

I wouldn't equate Christianity with denial of evolution. There are certain large sects within Christianity who do hold a creationist point of view. But also, you must take into account that the Vatican has also said Christianity and evolution are compatible. Let's not blame religion for the world's problems, because that is not the fundamental problem of social ills. |
