Arshavin's a huge talent, but I was surprised to find out that he's 27 years old. This season we saw what he can do at club level with Zenit, but why haven't we heard of him till now? Well he'll surely be off to one of the big clubs next season. He professed his love of Barcelona just the other day.

It has been mentioned MANY times by the commentators, that one of Russia's biggest problems was that they had no confidence in their own national team. They didn't take failure very well, and therefore, played cautiously. They got beat by Spain easy, but for whatever reason, they stepped it up enormously after that game. As you have seen they have shown marked improvement that has resulted in a lot of learning what they are capable of. I think the more they play together, the better this will get. I am looking forward to a good game tomorrow. :D

Because playing on a russian club team is like playing in a dungeon...

He has suitors from other leagues around the world now.

Well we all know that Russian football has only come to prominence in the last few years (I suppose when CSKA Moscow won the UEFA Cup in 2005) but the scouting networks of the big European clubs are vast. They scout players from every continent, so I'm a bit surprised that Arshavin hadn't been 'discovered' until this season. Maybe he's a late bloomer.

Rooting for Russia for sure. Im glad that the euro cup is picking up now.. it felt a few of the beginning matches were really boring. I was originally going for the dutch, but now its russia FTW.

I think it really all comes down to money. With all of these rich Russians about, rubles have been pumped into the Russian game like never before. For the last few years they have been able to afford to bring in talented players from abroad to raise the level of play in their domestic league. The Russian players benefit from the daily competition in training and in matches but have also greatly benefited from the experiences they've had while playing top European competition in the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. Also having the money to bring in a world class coach in Guus Hiddink, who can bring in a winning mentality as well as new techniques and tactics, is massive.

Wasn't ESPN's fault man. Lightning storms in Switzerland ed up the feed for everyone internationally. People in England and Canada had the same problems :)

Oh, I didn't know that. It was comical watching the crowd gathered outside in the "Fan Zone", though.

Yeah local channels had no issues, I believe the Fan Zone feeds were uninterrupted as they were direct from the stadium, they didn't have to pass through an international switcher type deal :p
