| I really love the atmosphere of the film, but all the same I have to note that the portrayal of the Japanese strikes me as pretty stereotyped and thin. |

Only the Japanese? I thought even the Americans were stereotyped, even if it was just for comical purposes.
I mean, "lip" can only be a noun! |

| i thought the movie gave a pretty good portrayal of japanese culture. i've lived there, and the reason i like the movie so much is for that reason alone. |

You really need to watch this movie a few times imo to appreciate every single scene and detail. |
I watched it once and I appreciated it. Great movie. |

Nothing happened in the movie.
Why people adore it is beyond me. |
Not true, there was plenty that happened. |

| it was about an emotional affair....which, to me, is more threatening than a one nighter. |

great movie in terms of cinematography and directing.
the plot is very well written too.
she's not as good as a director as her father, regardless of
how dreadful 'godfather III' turned out to be. |

It's lonely in a foreign country, you're bound to do someone you normally wouldn't back home.

I just can't see it that way, even though drama is by far my favourite genre.
It felt like the characters were behind a psychological shield, avoiding any kind of possible introspection and, instead, it seems to have focused on Japan more than on the characters. If I wanted to see Tokyo, I'd see a doco. |
