+1, only because it will be coupled with the absolute trouncing Nadal delivered Federer at the French Open a month ago. |

Yesterday's match was NOTHING like that.
in epic:eek: there arent enuff words to describe how unbelievable this match was.
Heartbreaking to see Roger lose, but Nadal is a in animal.
They BOTH deserved to win...but Nadal did just a bit more.

One match doesn't change the fact that the majority of mens tennis is boring....rallys just don't happen, at least womens tennis has rallys and is actually interesting. The men just hit the ball so hard that there is no real game. |

| Amazing match. Kinda pissed that I couldn't leave the couch for seven hours though. Tons of I had to do yesterday :( |

I state the obvious but the objective is still to win the point so I don't see why both opponents would want to have a long rally going. And as a result of that, the audience does get to see 'enjoyable' rallys every so often. Yesterday's game was a prime example at that. |

I just left the TV on really loud during the rain delays, and I'd come back to check every now and then when I hadn't heard any grunting from the Williams' sisters (in the doubles match NBC put on while we waited). But yeah, even with just pure gameplay, I was so unproductive yesterday. Worth it though! :D |

Obviously the players don't want a long rally. The problem is technology has surpassed the human ability. The players cannot keep up with the speed of the ball.
I use to enjoy tennis when you would have the rallies and you could see what the player was thinking and trying to accomplish. The player would pull the other player to one side of the court or set it up so he could rush the net. Now its mostly sit at the base line and hopefully the player reacts fast enough to get to the ball. Its usually Serve, Return, Return or Error. |

I'm missing something here...
how does technology play a role in the gameplay on court? :conf:
It's not like one player is shooting from a ball machine and the opponent has to face speeds that are beyond a human's ability to return.

Pulling the player to one side of the court or forcing him/her to rush the net - wouldn't you consider this sort of gameplay to be resulting in shorter rallies (in duration)?
I'm no tennis expert but I've always thought that a typical long sequence of shots is best accomplished from the baseline. |

I totally agree with you, I prefer watching women's tennis cause it's more entertaining I guess. Men's tennis is just kinda boring. I guess you can relate it to watching the San Antonio Spurs, all technical and point scoring that it's boring to watch. Compared to watching the Phoenix Suns where there's a lot more to watch... |

The technology in the raquets has created faster ball speed.
In the older days....you played a rally to try and get the other player out of position.....now the ball speed is so fast that you don't have a chance to develop a rally....and you don't really need to work at getting a player out of position. |

true, serve and shot speeds are faster in today's games but majority of the points are still won by not allowing the player to reach in time at the spot where the ball has been shot at. Only a few are won by the sheer pace of the shots/aces
To put it into perspective, even today the contenders are trying to get each other to move around the court as much as possible. It's not that you can depend only on the force you hit the ball with. |
