Yes the select service account lets you do all of that for free... gee sounds like a great deal but only if you keep a minimum balance of $5000. Haha. Ofcourse they would offer you all those perks, they have 5000 of your money making money for them. The minute your account dips below 5000 they slap you with a 24.95 monthly service charge. As for the 1% cash back its really nothing to write home about especially when American Express Gold is offering 2% (with no annual fee). |
The money that I have in the account is money that I don't need, so it's not a problem for me. I've had this account for a couple years now and haven't gone under the minimum balance once. Then again, especially for someone my age, I'm very good with personal finances and know that this wouldn't be a problem for me. I know it's not the best option for everyone to have just to get the perks.
I've definitely seen the benefits of the 1% back though, especially since like I said I use my VISA as a debit card. I rarely pay cash. American Express I'm hesitant to get however when I've gone to a number of establishments that I know don't accept it. Plus, I've been very happy with my experiences with TD and all the perks I get. My parents have an AmEX, but I'm only 24 and a student. I think 2 credit cards is enough for me! :) |

I have a Royal Bank RBC Rewards Gold Visa, and it gets me a ton of good stuff.
Like many others, it doubles the warranty on any product I purchase with it.
Unfortunately, as the fine-print states, it does not double the warranty on any spacecraft that I purchase. It actually says that. Spacecraft. |

just got my CIBC Platinum Visa, instead of the CIBC Optimum Visa which is being discontinued tomorrow
no annual fee, and I don't really care about any perks tbh.. |

You are better off investing that money. Even most safe investments will beat inflation. Having money depreciate due to inflation in a savings account isnt a good idea. |

I actually don't keep money in that account. The only money I keep in there is that minimum balance...and then a safe blanket of money for spending and my VISA. The majority of money I keep in a savings account at ING, and I have a fair bit of money in mid-risk RRSPs, mutual funds and GICs. |

Lisa its great that you're good at handling your personal finances but do you really understand finances? That money rotting away in your chequing account could be invested to make more money for you. Even the average "safe" mutual fund returns of 9-12 percent would yield you $600/year (w/o even compound interest) So please tell me as Law student (w/ school bills) do you or do not need that extra bit of money every year? and are the perks worth it? |

See above post. While I'm good at handling personal finances, I will admit I'm new to truly understanding them. My dad has been guiding me and trying to teach me about my options, but sometimes it's very overwhelming with all of the other things I have going on (e.g. rushing my Master's degree, volunteer work, my job and balancing my sanity by having some "Lisa" time).
And I'm EXTREMELY fortunate to have my parents supporting me through school (i.e. paying for anything related to my education) |
