As poorly worded as this is, I have to agree on all counts save for the whole "people in France are nice" comment.
They aren't/weren't, and I was hardly playing the part of the tourist. I have never been treated so utterly in my life as I was while I was in France.
Obviously that doesn't go for every person in the country, as there are plenty of French kids on TA I like quite a bit (save for that sketchy d-miurge kid :p), but my (brief) time in France was complete . |
Actually I think the main problem is the language. People suck at speaking another language. Plus if you don't know someone who can introduce you to what's really worthy, Paris-for-the-tourist sucks. |

For me it was the "being spit on for asking directions" part that was the main problem.
I was really, really on in Paris, Guillaume, and it bothered me more than anything because knowing the stereotypical French opinion of Americans I made a serious effort to be as polite as possible.
France was the only country I was in where my country's politics were not divorced from my worth as a person. It sucked. :( |

It's not a matter of nationality, it's just that actual Parisians are ing pricks, in general. I come from the southern France so I can be partial (a solid rivalry prevails), and I had the same problem when I was searching for my campus. I really felt like Borat in the NYC underground. |

And this is one of the reasons why I think the French Revolution was catastrophe when it comes to language, and I'm afraid the US may just as well follow that very same path if they decide to erradicate Spanish from the public sphere.
When French became the official language, in lieu of mantaining the former linguistic diversity, not only it seems to have frozen the ability of most speakers to deal with different ways of organising thought (which is essential to speak a different language), it's also definitely behind this nonsensical chauvinism Robert unfortunately witnessed. The less you know about foreigners (and that's easy if you don't speak their language), the easier it is to simply alienate them.
Unfortunately, it will take quite a few generations to thaw this linguistic ability... and I hope the EU can help the French on this issue. |

Never been to france personally, but from what people tell me, and my experiences with french culture, it's pretty far down on my list - Maybe not all the way down, but not that far from afghanistan.
Belgians on the other hand, are awesome. |

| That being said, I can't imagine how much it must suck to be an american in france. Being from quebec I get mixed attitudes from the french - some of them love us like brothers and some of them hate us because they think we're uncultured goons who like to butcher their language (epic lolz). |
