I go shopping in the States all the time, DEFINITELY go to the
Somerset Collection (about 30-40 min outside of Detroit). Although I have never been there, I hear the Village of Rochester Hills is supposed to be nice. I don't remember if they're outlet stores or not, but it's an out door mall...so really nice in the summer time. The reason I've never been though is b/c I can't find it. Alas, I have found their
website though, and perhaps I will check it out now!
I know Somerset is in a really nice area (Troy)...so there's lot of nice restaurants around there too if you want to make a day of it. |
Try great lakes crossing mall in auburn hills. The original Vaughan Mills. Youll see what i mean when you go there! |

dunno about now but in the 90s detroit had some great parties. The packard building, better days, The warehouse down on jefferson. Some of the parties that went down at st andrews. not to mention the amazing warehouse parties in the sketchiest parts of town. |

oh yeah and the parties that used to happen on 8 mile in the warehouse behind the rippers.... where all you heard all night was pounding techno and nitrous balloons being blown up.

I'm not talking about parties. You can find good parties almost anywhere but the city itself is a complete hole. |

While I'm definitely not a spokesperson for Detroit, and I don't think it's a great place to vacation, I definitely don't think it's as big of a hole as it had been. They're trying to build it up.
For instance,
The Detroit Institute of the Arts just got fully renovated.
The Detroit Science Centre also went through MAJOR renovations and reopened in 2001.
The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village ALSO went through renovations in recent years, expanding the Ford Rouge Factory Tour, an IMAX, amusement park rides, Greenfield Village (set in America's past), the Henry Ford Museum and Benson Ford Researh Center.
The Detroit Zoo isn't too bad either. |

Downtown Detroit has really improved, ever since the superbowl and baseball allstar game, new stadiums for the Tigers and the Lions... Fox Theater, great concerts at Filmore and St. Andrews...
Not to mention DEMF....
Woodward is all cleaned up, nice, no more empty stores or bums...
It's turning around I hope...
OBVIOUSLY the hoods are ghetto...
Now as far as shopping.... Somerset and Great Lakes... Go to the ghetto malls like Oakland and Southland, there be the deals... TJ Maxxx and Burlington Coat Factory.. picked up a in epic Nicole Miller, pinstrip french cuff, tapered modern fit back and wide collar dress shirt for $10!!! Grabbed 5 polo shirts from Macy's for $4.50 a piece! And best deal of the day... Iron Maiden t-shirt for $2! |
