Well, the cops refused to drive us back to the venue, but they would "drive us to the nearest town". Which happened to be Barry's Bay. From Barry's Bay, we had to wait for the ONE cab that the town had to get to us and drive us back to the campsite.
Despite being jerks with the whole pullover thing, they were decent enough afterwards. They waited around to make sure we got a cab, offered us a cold drink, and even let the GF pose on the cop motorcycle for pics and stuff lol. It still ended up being a 2 hour mission from stop back to venue. It sucks, but what can you do, the guys are just doing their job I suppose. Sucked that we missed Dr Trance, OS2 and Anabolic Frolic. Ah well, such is life. Its always an adventure with WEMF! |

I remember seeing somewhere that 2007 had something like 5000 ppl.
I wonder if Sensation white would be bigger since they would most likely hold it in the Rogers Centre (skydome) ... that would be sweet! |

Well not sure how the wristbands work because there were 3 kinds. Underagers were orange, staff/artists purple, and blue regular folks |

ok! now thats its tuesday and i've had a couple of days to vegitate and recover, I can write somewhat of a review. We were especially hyped about this WEMF for a few reasons.
- It being the last one.
- Location far up north.
- The fact that we were running a renegade stage for the first time.
Left late Thursday night to swing by Oshawa to pick up Andie and co. By about midnight - 1am, our little convoy had left the 24 hour walmart and was well on its way. Took our time getting there, making a few stops along the way including one memorable one with the sun coming up at "Eagles Nest" right outside Bancroft. Just gorgeous!
Good thing we took our time because once we got there at 6:30 am, there was atleast a 3 hour wait to even lineup. Tried to get some sleep but found it hard to do sitting up in a van. Finally lined up at about 10 and were in and in a half decent spot by 11.30.
"and then the rain came down!" Threatened all night but didn't come down till we started setting up. What a mess!! Somehow though through all the waterlogged tents and mushy ground, we got the area setup. Thankgod that generator ran in the rain :). Music got up and running and the weekend had begun.
Friday night was a good time. Walked around for a bit bumpin into Jem and co. Bound for Sound was just setting up at this time and looked very solid early on. Definately was excited about playing there later.
As the night wore on and the main stages started up, there was definately excitement in the air as the rain had cleared and the 4x4 stage sounded and looked phenomenal.
As things turned out, didn't end up spending too much time at the main stages in the end. I felt the vibe to be alot better at the renegade stages and the fact that we were running one had me slightly paranoid about our rented equipment. Ahsan, my brother Hamza and my Dad (first and only WEMF) showed up at about 3am Friday night / Sat morning and things were certainly in full flow. We went and checked out Chris Liberator and Deko-ze to close out friday night and both were sick as hell. Gotta love Chris Liberator!!!
Saturday started off as re-fuel day as we hit Madawaska to pick up gas for the generator, water, lil bit of food and other such commodities. Little bit of drama when we left the can of gas sitting at the gas station right near the pump. Didn't realize this till about an hour later when we rushed back only to our shock to find the gas can STILL sitting there. Hillarious!
We had a DJ Marilyn play a nice lil chilled out vocal house set to start the morning, followed by Cam Maxwell and the fantastic Jackie Pashley!! She had the area full of gawking admirers with her good looks and she played a great set too :) By the time Andrew came on our stage, the sun had gotten sharp and was draining the energy right outta everyone. So we all took a seat and decided to give him a good listen. Very impressive as always. There were a bunch of first timers hearing him play and they loved his smooth progressive style on what was a gorgeous sunny afternoon.
At about 5pm I played on the Bound for Sound stage which I can personally say was a hell of an experience. Two reasons here, the first being the incredible sound setup here. Simply fantastic system in place made it a real treat to listen to and especially play on. The second thing is the fact that I take this music very seriously and here was a stage where a large number of my peers on a week in and week out basis were camped out. Playing in front of this audeince had me nervous as hell but I think it worked out just fine :) Thank you Anas, Dom and all others who made that such an experience. Had to rush soon as I was done cuz I was playing back at our stage.
Upon return to our area, we figured out that the 4x4 stage was no longer the 4x4 stage. What a disappointment this turned out to be as I was looking forward to the short distance to travel to check out some of the bigger names that night. Honestly, I couldn't have been bothered walking the longer distance to the new 4x4 stage so we just decided to do it up hard at ours. And we did...all the way till 8am sunday morning. Nothing but amped up epic trance / psy after 5am.
Overall, this was quite the exhausting experience. The logistical nightmare involved in setting up your own renegade stage as well as the tension involved in insuring that everything goes smoothly really showed as Lauren and myself were both write offs on both sunday night and monday all day (no tennis). However nothing beats the good company of friends ever and we all I think had a blast.
I had slight issues with the DnB on saturday night but drowned it out by cranking our system to the max. Kudos to Moog Audio for the fantastic equpiment and to all the terrific DJs who took time out of their schedules to play Tullytune's Renegade stage. I'm not mentioning names cuz i'll probably miss a few...you were all fantastic!
Destiny, a special note to you. Congratulations on running another successful event. This WEMF seemed to rise out of confusion into some very good times. I will not be a regular at CEMF unfortunately as our last experience there was NOT a good one at all. Hopefully next year, we have some sort of replacement festival of some sort because it as events like this that the community that we all love truly comes togeter :)

Finally recovered and all I can say is amazing....
Saw Anabolic Frolic for the first time and he blew my mind. He made me smile in the way that very very few DJs are able to do.... incredib,le vibe all around, and it was nice to see a mix of people dancing like candy kids.
And yes, the set times were just kinda messed up, but hey, with so many DJs, you have to work around their schedules, and there's nothing you can do about it.
I would like to send a HUGE shout-out to Hatiras. Man, I said this to you at wemf, but I want people to know how amazing you did.... For a DJ who spins house to get out of the most insane happy hardcore set by anabolic frolic and do it well, you have made the impossible happen. Space Invader was a great track to open on and you got right into your groove. Great job *cheers*
Mark EG was naturally awesome... he's crazy and makes me want to jump up and down. And so I did.
Swaping the 4x4 stage with the DnB stage on Saturday was a little annoying, as I had positioned my tent closer to the 4x4 stage for the reason that I wanted to have trance in my head all weekend.... but after they changed, I was a little disapointed and realixed that having a nap at any point during the weekend was not going to happen. Oh well... Wemf is not a place for sleeping.
The beach was a great little treat on Saturday. Made the lack of showers not an issue and got me ready for the most insane Saturday night party ever!
Sunday morning was bittersweet.... watching the most beautiful sunrise with my best friends (who I met at WEMF a few years back) made me realize how much WEMF has brought so many people together and has formed new bonds and made so people smile. I don't think I stopped smiling once.
Thank you Destiny, the DJs, the clean-up crew, the party-goers, the security guards, the paramedics, the sound and lighting techs and everyone else who has helped WEMF stay alive for so long. WEMF may never happen again, but the memories will live on :) |
