Agreed-- Very good points Vza!...
I used to be waaay into rap and hip hop... probably from age well... 10 to 19ish, then I fell in love with Trance.. Had no idea what trance was, and I wouldn't ever know without a few friends introducing me, so its definitely an issue of accessibility of EDM for those who have no clue... Hip hop is everywhere on the radios, you cant get away from it, my mom probably knows more mainstream rap than I do considering I dont ever turn on a radio anymore...
Still appreciate my old school tunes tho, I any type of music I am into at the moment I tend to turn addict style... from being in 6th grade (and what like 4 feet tall !!...) and belting out Biggie & Puff lyrics at my FIRST CONCERT EVER!... while having curious onlookers look at me & my sister like 'omg are these kindergarteners crazy'!!!? ... Now im 100% tranced out obsessed.. I finally came to my senses, I tend to hate current rap/hip-hop..
either way mad respect for the freestyles vza!!... probably one of the most entertaining things to watch for real!! :) |

Well... I rap. I have been rapping for like, 7 years or something like that. I have a music video, a pretty decent swagger, I even met with the CEO of Ultra Records to discuss a deal. All this happened before I started listening to EDM. I didn't even know about Ultra when I went there... imagine my utter jaw dropping when I started getting into electronic and realizing who I had met with. Ultra has a hip-hop label under it and Pat Moxey, the CEO said that his door is open again to me if I can come back with tighter production and more videos. Basically, they MIGHT be willing to do distribution and promotion if I can get the production aspects done myself...
being that I have this unique view of being on TA and loving everything that goes with it AND having somewhat made a small mark in the rap game, I feel like I can answer your question quite fully...
the reason that rap/hip-hop/RB whatever you want to call it, dominates the US charts, is because it was born, raised, and expanded in America for one thing. Whereas although Detroit is where its at as far as EDM goes, it's been perfected in Europe more, imo. maybe I'm wrong...
The american public is more familiar with the RB of old, ie the motown sound and the blues, etc. The orginal/true hip-hop culture was born out of that. DJing, bboying, graffiti, and the MC were the four components. That is cool and appealed on a large scale to many many people. Even though it was born out of the angst of urban life in the late 70's and 80's, it represented a new and sometimes forbidden culture to non-afro american youth in the 90's, Towards the late 90's is where I see it turning pop... not pop like Michael Jackson was pop, but pop like Brittney Spears pop. Basically, because it was already popular, record execs knew they could manufacture and sell a product, call it music, and push it on the radio to teens and tweens.
i think the reason EDM never took off like that in America was because it had the stigma of being exclusively underground. Also, lets face it, a lot of people in the 'rave' scene of old were a bunch of wierdos. Plus the fact that the US is overall very homophobic and hateful of gays, and EDM has in some cases been linked to being gay music (my friends called me a fag for listening to trance, until i gave them pills... next thing I knew they were crawling on the floor with pacifiers in theirs mouths thanking me). PLUS, the whole drug-relation with EDM throws people off as well...
those are the reasons why I feel like rap music is more popular in the US
NOW... in todays society, with the whole concept that we are living in a 'global village' taking off, I see electronic dance music moving more forward into the main stream... in big cities and college campus' at least. As the world becomes more connected through the internet and the economy, I see EDM rising in popularity. Some people might say they dont want that. They want their EDM to stay underground. They dont want DJ's to 'sell-out'. They dont want people who arent obsessed with the music listening. I say that. If people like the music they like it. period.
once again... thats my opinion. hate it or love it. you just read it. |
You took some guy's post, which wasn't really even a question, and basically answered everything i didn't even know that i wanted to know. loved the post. gotta have respect for everything, even if you don't love it. i love edm, but i'm down with rap. as pvd said, he's played in places all over the world. vietnam, brazil, all over europe, and for some reason, only in the US has EDM not emerged as the dominant listening genre. he says for some reason americans prefer rap. all i can say is, not this american. but he's right. |

thanks everybody. music is pretty much my son. whether its producing, performing (vocal or instrumental), listening, mixing, studying, or hustling. Im bout it bout it. so when it comes to like.... comparisons of music in the media or from a global perspective i try and stay on top of things.
to be perfectly honest, my roots are in classical and jazz, seeing that ive been playing the tuba since 5th grade and trombone since 8th (im 25 and still play well). I actually see a lot of comparisons between trance and classical music in the sense that the four key components of classical instrumentation are melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture. just like trance. It's all about having each specific instrument mesh with each other to create texture, while the key signatures of each piece remain in sync by 3rd, 5ths, 7ths, etc. Thats the texture and harmony right there. We all know about melody, its the part we remember, and rhythm, cause hey, we TA's love to dance, and you gots to have rhythm to do that. but anyway... those 4 elements are very prevalent in trance and some other forms of EDM. All of that, coupled with the fact that all the hot comes out of Europe... and most famous composers were born in either austria or gernmany... leads me to ask the question...
where my Austrian EDM producer/DJs at??????? |

Like it or not, EDM is about drugs. EDM was much bigger in the US in the late 90s than it is today when E was $5 a pill and easy to get. EDM is more popular in europe because drugs are easier to get at clubs and the penalties are softer. EDM would be more popular in the US if possession of E wasn't a felony. |

Hmmm... I don't know whether to agree or disagree. I know for a fact that drugs go GREAT with EDM. Tripping on Andy's Terrace was amazing and who doesn't enjoy rolling face when Ferry is tearing the decks apart. The thing is, when I got sober (for the most part) and stopped doing drugs (for the most part) I realized that I like EDM just as much. Cause lets be honest here... who does drugs EVERY time they listen to trance, house, minimal, electro, prog, whatever. You couldnt. I mean, I listen to house when I drive, im sober. I listen to minimal when I study, Im sober. I DJ at this bar in Syracuse and spin EDM, and im sober. Its not ALL about drugs. its just that drugs enhance the experience. Can you honestly say that jimi hendricks' music is only for when you are ed up. or the beatles. or the doors?? I dont think so..
I seem to remember reading something about how PVD signed a contract banning glowsticks from his shows because they promote drug use, and he doesn't think you should have to be on drugs to enjoy his music. That greatly reduces the potential fan base, future and existing.
so basically, that, yo. Its not about drugs, its about the LOVE maaaaaaaan. |

The girls dance on the bar, the guys do it hardcore with the fist pumping, my friends on occasion will stand in a dark corner and bust out the photons, I go absolutely wild - running around, jumping on the bar, dancing, and of course hella jesus poses. The Long Island kids tell me how they're gonna use their 'connections' to get me gigs in the city... LOL at that. but yeah, its a great time.
(one time these girls were dancing so hard on a table that the thing collapsed beneath them!!!!! ROFL!!!!!!!!!) |
