Networks/Internet question

Hey,
I have 2 computers networked. 1 computer has internet access on it, which is shared. The computer without the internet connection often accesses the net slowly becuz the computer with the internet access is hogging all the bandwidth. Is there any program to allow you to limit the bandwidth of certain connections/processes/programs or something similiar. Or prehaps just to reserve say 10% of the bandwidth for the computer without internet access...
Bit of a tricky q I know, prob won't get ne answers but nm... ;( |

We need a little more info before anyone can give you a better answer. There are ways of sharing bandwidth from networked computers.
What OS are you running?
Kind of internet connection? if high speed, what and do you run a router? (Since you sometimes need one to have more then one computer use the same IP)
There are a few programs that will do it. But more then likely you just need to create a paths for sharing your bandwidth on the networked computers.

XP with DSL quickstep...
Checked out that thing out rozzer, seems to measure bandwidth rather than manage it.
Just something that would let me say put the max download speed on each machine to 30k, max upload to 15k would do ;( |

I can't remember but with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing; Windows98SE OS and up) doesn't that have options for bandwidth?
How are they networked with now? Just between NIC cards?
Or do you have a hub/router? |

| I think ICS only works with dial-up but I'm not sure. |

Well have you ever thought the problem maybe the cable you are using, or the network cards. Because that maybe slowing it down, and ofcaorse the distance the computers are apart.
Make sure you use fast cables, we use 4mbit cables, and my mate is getting gig cables soon.
So that might be the reason.
But try the software anyway :) |

| I'm using xp, I don't c ne bandwidth options in the ICS, it's a wireless network so it's not to do with cables. It is running at a decent speed and it's because the computer with ICS on is hogging allll the damn bandwidth ;( |

| Well if you had a switch or router that could let you limit bandwidth on a per-port and per-traffic-type basis, I'd say install that bad boy right inbetween your two computers. But since you're wireless, I dunno. |

| fork over $50 for a dsl/cable router and use it as a dhcp server. simple as pie! |
