Is it just me or is Mark Oliver starting to burn out? He use to be really good but lately, he's starting to suck. |
While I think Mark Oliver is a fantastic DJ and has done a lot for the Toronto scene, I've thought this for quite awhile. |

to be fair that's part of the idea, a number of comments were that his closing is good so he probably saves his A-game and best tracks, he can't go too hot before the headliner or they'd get annoyed and not want him to open for them in future. doesn't mean he needs to suck prior to the headliner but just not bring the house down. i'd say reviewing nights with only mark would be the best way to decide whether he's still got it or losing his touch. |

I agree with this.
Also, Throughout my years at the Guv some of Mark's closing sets have blew me the away...sometimes even blowing the headliner out of the water. That hasn't happened in a long time though. |

agreed and all, but I'll never forget how he opened with house before Menno
that was just retarded |

Openning and closing DJs have entirely different roles.
His job for an openning set is to get the crowd in the mood and pumped up for the headliner. Without him, the headliner would be a pornstar without a hard on.
His closing sets keep the groove, you really see the mastery of his work and reminds everyone the great DJ he really is. He knows what he's doing. He reads the crowd like no other DJ as he's able to open and close for all kids of headliners' styles. That's pretty versatime IMO. The Guv is a business, and his role is key that makes everyone coming back for more, even without headliners.
See him for more than just one or two resident's nights and see the world-class DJ he really is. |

I have been witness to a couple myself. I haven't seen Mark play in ages though so I won't comment on the rest. |

| since Mark is always on first he is playing to the more clubber-type crowd that gets there at 11pm, the people that leave before the main dj even comes on...he is forced to play more recognizable songs for people that probably aren't really into the scene. I don't like it either and avoid the main room when he is on but I understand why he does it. I heard him close once and he was better. |

His opening sets agreed are nothing more than a warm up with a good couple of songs that I like hearing but nothing more than that, hence why I never take his opening sets seriously. It's mostly prog anyway. If he only played an hour and a bit that would be good enough for me, but GUV has its ways of making a night move so I won't question that.
Never stayed long enough for his closing sets. Normally after the headliners are off I am gone with em too, so I still have yet to hear the rest of his sets. |
