Players pass out, get sick during extreme battle.

If it's good enough for Cartman, it's good enough for Square-Enix.
The developers of the online role-playing game Final Fantasy XI seemingly borrowed a page from the Emmy-winning South Park episode "Make Love, Not Warcraft" by updating the game with one of the longest - and most physically grueling - video game fights ever. Introduced in the game's latest downloadable update, the boss monster "Pandemonium Warden" remained perfectly fit after a group of high-level adventurers wailed away at it nonstop for over 18 hours straight.
Though the seemingly unbeatable boss will not prevent people from 'completing' the game -- persistent online games typically do not "end" like most single-player games -- it has sparked debate over what exactly the game's developers, Square-Enix, expect out of their devoted fan base. Message boards have lit up with disgruntled players calling out the company for failing to respect its very own in-game warning telling players they have "no desire to see your real life suffer as a consequence [of playing]. Don't forget your friends, your family, your school or your work."
Easy for them to say. While the beast continually healed, the gamers weren't so lucky.
"People were passing out and getting physically ill," leaders of the player guild said in a forum post. "We decided to end it before we risked turning into a horrible news story about how video games ruin people's lives."
Too late. |
18 hours straight and you can't beat a boss? I think it's a sign that maybe, just maybe it's ok to have a life outside of a game so you can, you know, take care of yourself :o

i hate that when anyone has a negative opinion on something its labelled as "narrow minded". why, if someone talks about how awesome something is, do they never get the same treatment? its exactly the same thought process after all.
in any event, the internet has shown me that the last thing i ever want to do is hang around with people in an online gaming world that is full of the idiots we see in places like TA. and we wont even touch on the fact that level-grinding and dungeon-hacking isn't actually roleplaying at all. |

It is narrow minded because you've just grouped every single online multiplayer game into the same category.
That's like me saying:
"all games cause violence"
or
"all singleplayer games suck" |

no, not every single online multiplayer games. just the MMORPGs :p most of which require no roleplaying nor skill to play. i cant think of anything worse than being forced to listen to 15 year olds cry "noob!" over my headset. i cant think of anything worse than doing so in an environment that essentially has no goal. grind grind grind. get some new items. grind some more.
and all for a monthly charge! what a bargain. |

Er, ok I could be totally off base here, but from the article it doesn't sound like the battle is designed to take 18 hours, it sounds more like these idiot players were doing something horribly wrong while fighting it, causing/allowing the boss to continuously heal itself.
I mean, the language "remained perfectly fit" suggests no progress towards killing it, not 3/4 progress, so I have no idea where they're getting "a solid day" from. Moreoever, it's entirely possible to drag out battles in other types of games if you don't play them properly, so the only real news here seems to be that the players were dumb enough to spend 18 hours banging their head against the wall when what they were doing obviously wasn't working. |
