course numbers, duh :p normally they will reflect the level of the course. ie politics 101 is first year, while politics 201 might be second. |

They're just the course numbers the university uses. I don't know why I even typed them. 200-level courses are graduate-level though. |

I thought so, but because the system we use here is different, I always wondered what the last two numbers mean (i.e. what's the difference between a 103 and a 106).

Pretty much every school uses a different numbering system. At my school the first number is the grade level 1 for freshman, 2 for sophomore, 3 for junior,... up to 8 or 9 for doctoral research. Every university must have different grad school requirements because I know here 9 hours (3 classes) is considered full time, and you aren't allowed to work for anyone while you are taking your degree. a $20,000 stipend is given each year and all tuition/fees are paid for by the university. |

| Ya it is the same for most UT schools I think. The only other one I went to was UT in Austin and they used the same numbering system except 3 numbers instead of 4 numbers. Like CHE 434 instead of CHE 4334. |

Yea in my school the numbering even varies by department. Usually the only convention is y.0xz is an intro subject in department y, and all the other y.wxz are numbered based on category as opposed to level. for ex in math w = 1 means analysis, w=2 mathematical physics, etc.
so i guess conventions vary a lot... |
