I was just wondering to those in music theory whether you believe the term "Improvisation" can be applied to the predominantly pre-rendered styles of EDM.

When I hear something like the above, I think improvisation. But, by definition, if you produced something like that through fruity loops(after 900 edits and some mastering) and then hit render, would it be an improvised piece?

I can't listen to the clip at work, but, I would say that anything that has been edited as such would not be improvised. That is not to say, however, that EDM can not be improvised.

no, unless the modulation and keys were done live, recorded, and then not edited

if you hit record and then make the entire track in real time i would consider it improvisation.

Getting warmer, but by definition, it would have to be made up on the spot. As in, not "pre-planned" or notated. Just like improv comedy has no script.

well yes I agree, but you could have say a theme to work with. That's basically how classical improvisation worked right?

Yeah, it's kinda important to have a theme to work with... but with a little bit of knowledge of music theory, you can make something musical while still being a bit random. :)

Let's say you program the rhythm section (you lay down beats, percussions and bassline) and some other stuff. Then you play it back and record yourself playing something you haven't previously composed on another instrument (a piano, for example) in real time on top of that. There you would have an improvisation. Improvisation means you're making up what you play as you're playing.

This.

(Though, drums can be improvised as well, and often are. I know you know this, I'm just helping clarify.)

True. Improvisation can be done on any instrument.
