Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. Just not as inspirational as some of his other speeches, most notably the 04 speech.

i thought the speech was very well-structured in how he first honored mccain for his one strength (service), then dismantled his viability as a leader on purely academic terms without once resorting to a cheap attack. he made a very strong argument for how mccain is another four years of bush using the man's own words and actions. he disarmed the republican strategy of campaigning on small, divisive ideas and character assassination by explaining why the gop resorts to such tactics (when you don't have anything to run on, you look for ways to make people run from). he made the argument for the need for change in washington, not just in policies, but how it operates fundamentally. he addressed american cynicism for the political process in a way no politician has ever acknowledged before. he began to explain some of the ideas he intends to implement from office - and most of them i'm on board with. and to tie it all together he outlined what makes america great, showing us just how much we all have in common for all those so immersed in punditry that they've forgotten. he sought to unite all americans by revealing how trivial our perceived differences are. there were so many good talking points and issues he brought up. maybe it was a mediocre speech, but where the bar's been at for the last 8 years, it's strange to hear an politician in america speak such truths with such conviction. the way i know obama will be a good leader is this: he's capable of seeing things the way they are. the way he talks about the realities of today shows me he understands how and why. and not only does he understand, he doesn't try to use this understanding as insider knowledge to exploit the unwitting like so many polticians around him. he uses it to open the people's eyes by putting it all on the table. i think that's the biggest change he brings. it's evidenced in yesterday's speeches by harry reid, john kerry, bill clinton and joe biden. those speeches touched on the same ideas of openness and renewal, and were pretty profound themselves.

Barack has a long way to go. He'll get a bounce out of the convention (by some estimates a 10 point national lead over McCain).....but he will now have to endure an onslaught of negative campaigning over the next 9 weeks. This is going to be the most difficult part of the campaign.

i think most of the country has grown familiar with rove-style attacks and they've become less effective. obama has already proven he can transcend that dialogue by explaining the motive behind the attack and reframing the argument so that you walk away thinking about the right things. the difficulty, i think, will be keeping his composure through an exhaustive tour through the battleground states.
