But of course, it's not really.

Nope, it's because it was first played in warehouses. In Chicago, if I'm not mistaken.

Isn't that acid house?

Yes. It's called "Acid House" because it was played in warehouses. Of course.

Oh. I thought it was played at various underground parties that were held in warehouses.

I know what you are talking about, you are referring the classic techno-type music, such as the old sets from Carl Cox, Marco Carola, Sven Vath, Rino Cerrone, Misstress Barbara...etc...the repetetive techno type stuff which if you listen to it long enough will get your mind spinning in circles and you will forget what time it is, what day it is, whether you are alive, or if you are in heaven.

I do consider that is music "putting you in a trance" or a trance-like-state.

But as I have always considered it, "trance music" of the EDM definition is electronic music with a beat that involves some elements of synth (could be keyboard or a rackmount), and often involves string synths, musical overtures, pianos, or some sort of classic-type (multi-octave, elemental riff to set mood) I've heard trance with psy-elements, piano, and warm strings, I've heard it with just strings, or any combination of string, synth, or piano elements. I basically believe that "trance music" is techno-type music, with rhythmic beat, with some sort "sorts" of atmospheric elements layered on top of it, often to set mood, to add an epic feel or to soften the ear or appeal to a greater audience (I don't know alot of hardcore schranz fans out there nowadays ;-)

Umm, what? Pretty much everything you hear in a track in all genres of EDM is going to be from a synth.

Okay, if you consider a drum machine a synth...

But not all of it is going to have epic string sequenced riffs layered or pianos or other more classical-type music elements. I think that's what really sets "trance" apart.

I've always considered the more house-y stuff to have a "groove-like" feel with a wobbly bassline and more "jazz/disco/italo" elements, and not really go towards the angelic/epic sound, or have a classical flowing type feel. Always I have considered the housey stuff to be more chunky, groovy, and "sometimes" mellow, but not really sound epic or like a symphonic movement, much as I would consider trance.

when did you start listening to "trance"? 2003?

and a drum machine sometimes is a synth, depends which one... for me trance is an edm style that makes you trippy, lose yourself in it so it can really be a variety of stuff, but then again i hate genre definitions, so...

Are you thick? Most sounds you hear in Techno, House, Downtempo, Ambient, etc. all come from synths. Just because they don't have sounds you'll hear in what you define as a Trance track doesn't mean that a synth is not used.

Most old-school drum machines actually were synthesizers; they were really primitive and only made certain sounds.
