tons of big guys still play records. |
He played all vinyl when we saw him last year. Obviously a lot can change in that time - but he definitely had at least four huge crates with him in Chicago. |

I saw him here on November, last year IIRC...and he alternated between vinyl and CDs. |

| It seems to me that most of the proponents of vinyl are either hip-hop DJs, for whom the physicality of touching records is essential, or some sort of top40 DJ, who thinks what they do is the dog's balls. Many DJs are threatened by technology and change and feel intimidated by all the noobs coming into the scene, having access to digital music, access to DJ software instead of the turntables, learning how to use the software faster than the old skool DJs can, and picking some great tunes. Not all of the newbies are great, most aren't, but the threat is still there. There was much debate about CDs vs. vinyl and how CDs were cheating and not "true" format. In the end, it's whatever works for you. |

I do not think the technology itself is what annoyed purists as much as the fact that it can be a hard pill to swallow when they spend a few hundred dollars a month on tracks, a few grand on gear while some hack with little to no effort strings a bunch of pirated mp3's together on pirated software and decides to call themself a dj.
you can usually spot them by the dj in front of their screen name.
pretty sad imo. |

What exactly do you think is running on that laptop :p |

Because the other genres embraced digital a LONG time ago. Techno DJs held out a bit longer. |
Did they? Or was it the labels still releasing promo's on vinyl that kept the plate scene alive a bit longer than other genre's that dropped that format in favour of CDs a long time ago?
Its interesting to see the techno djs embracing the technology and actually pushing the format to the current max... not to say they're doing that entirely, but this vid from Hawtin, certainly opened my eyes to the format as well.
As per any modern day success story, either you have a big gimmick like wearing a giant goldfish bowl painted as a mouse-head... or you have a particularly goofy set-up/presentation that makes you famous.
In 'Scratch' techno djs clearly got what they wanted out of new technology - - in that it had the feel and old-school approach to mixing still with some vinyl influence. Going fully digital is another step, but perhaps after experimenting with the software, they've realised like Hawtin here, that it allows for a totally new approach for their livesets, and guys like that, at the top of the game are ALWAYS about pushing new boundaries, no matter what format they're using to push with. |

Right, but Clovis mentioned techno DJ's in particular, and I was wondering as to why the aesthetics of wax and convenience of digital files were somehow more of priority with those playing techno than other genres. :)
Anyway, Chris Fortier is one of the major jocks still running with an almost entirely vinyl set-up. |
Because most of them don't want to lose the operation of a turntable. It's not because it's more important for that genre, that is just the trend I have seen. With Traktor scratch out now, everyone seems to like it and more people are jumping on board the control vinyls + laptop setup. |
