I must agree, some Muslim countries are governed by vegetables. Some of them have absolutely no education, and live on oil.

But I wouldn't judge the religion on the same basis. It isn't Islams fault, and Islam does not support killing or punishing people regardless.

Punishing is upto God.

The vast majority of countries (I think all actually) that punish sodomy with death are Muslim countries. So there's a near perfect correlation with legalized fag killing and the dominant religion of that country, regardless of whether the countrry follows the true form is Islam.

Every single religious tradition I can think of has some kind of eccentric fringe group, that hardly means that people whose faith is similar (read "not the same") tolerates every aspect of all variations on their faith.

I agree with you, kind of.

It really annoys me when you get idiots saying "ALL MUSLINS R TERRORISTS LULZ".

I'm well aware that the groups responsible for and associated with terrorism are extremists, exactly like the IRA or the other groups I mentioned.

I've studied the Islamic faith at school and recently finished reading Shantaram, The Kite Runner and Omar Nasiri's book Inside The Jihad, all of which taught me more. On the whole I think Islam is a very admirable religion, perhaps more so than any other bar Buddhism.

However, that such a group should have come to exist in the first place makes you question where the religion that reared them went wrong. Feel free to correct me on this Nayil, but doesn't the Quran make mention of Jihad and mujaheddin, two concepts which, even if abused and taken to the extreme, are outright violent ones by their very nature, which Islam's holiest book preaches?

I'm not going to debate here.

Everyone is entitled to opinions, so are you. You may however want to read up on extremism, which is strictly against the religion's policy.

Again, I'm not some ignoramus who assumes that extremists represent a whole religion, however I think something should have been done to pull these bastards in line before they ever reached the stage they are at now, or more attempts should be made to control them now.

I'm not singling Islam out either - the Catholic church should be using more of it's considerable resources to prevent the situation in Northern Ireland, as should the Church of England, and same goes for religious conflicts around the world.

Another point is that Muslim extremists are somewhat unique in that they employ heavy recruitment drives and hold forums within Mosques to denounce their enemies and perhaps even plot violence. If Islam as a whole does not support violence, then why have these splinter groups been allowed to continue preaching their false word within religious buildings?

Nothing within the notion of Jihad inherently entails violence.

Since you've studied Islam yourself, you are probably aware by now that the word 'Jihad' literally means to 'strive' or 'struggle,' and this underlying concept is found in different types of Jihad, one of them being the actual act of warfare, which is considered legitimate only if certain conditions are met.

The view of the Sufi's (the mystics of Islam) advance quite a beautiful view of the concept, distinguishing between 'greater' and 'lesser' Jihad, with greater Jihad being:

quote:
...the inner battle against all the forces which would prevent man from living according to the theomorphic norm which is his primordial and God given nature

This was a quote from an article by Seyyed Hossein Nasr, professor of Philosophy over at GWU, a Sufi, and one of the most authoritative sources on Islam and Islamic Philosophy today.

The whole article, which discusses the spiritual significance of Jihad, is worth reading (just about anything this man writes is worth reading):

That's correct, I had forgotten that there are a few types of Jihad besides the violent one. Thanks for pointing that out.

However, as far as I'm aware there is still mentions in the Qur'an of using violence as a means of spreading the Islamic faith, which Nayil could perhaps confirm or deny?

Anyone know about Wahidi Islam? It is the faction that most of these guys and what the ruling party of Iran are practicing. It is unfortunately a very violent and intolerant sect of Islam.
