If it's an older crowd, don't even bother with chill-out/ambient during dinner. I'd put on a "Best of" Dave Brubeck or David Sanborne CD and let people eat.
During "party" time, definitely stick to the biggest disco tracks as well as kitchy 80's (Love Shack, Walk Like an Egyptian, etc).
In fact, you might just want to go to iTunes and download the tracks in their 70's, 80's and 90's Party "Essentials" and just play those.
I'm a big proponent of keeping a strong mental wall between "event" DJ's (wedding, prom, corporate events) and club DJ's. The latter is about art and self-expression and the former can only be concerned with service. |
Well said. |

especially if you drop that dj isaac - impressed, where the girl is talking about ing the dj, the corporate party will be successful. |

Well said... and I would agree with you. However, in this case, I said to the event planner (and I quote): "I don't really do the whole 'wedding DJ' type thing". I had a discussion with her about it and she still wants me to do it.
So, I figure, within reason... if they crowd doesn't like what I have to offer, that's more her fault than mine. |

End of the day i don't agree.
As a Dj i think you should play what the people want to hear in front of you. It's about entertaining them, not yourself.
Once you produce your own sound and people come to hear you play your/style music then you can start playing only the music you like but if you're helping people out or playing at a friend's sister's bday party you don't rock up and play EDM all night long.
But this is of course just my 2c..
Either way I'm sure you'll have a great night.
Let us know how it goes.

I think you misunderstand, though. I'm not going to "rock up and play EDM all night long". My plan was/is to play jazz and chillout type stuff, and then work into some mellow deep house for the people who stay late and want to dance about. I tend to think that's not the same thing as "rocking up and playing EDM all night long". Really, the whole night will end up being jazz-themed/infused.
I get what everyone's saying though, don't get me wrong. |

You'll probably be fine if I get what you're going for, however be prepared to change to traditional cheezy stuff or get booed/dirty looks/p'oed people coming at you. Keep that in mind, especially if you want repeat gigs. |

there's a difference between playing a mobile gig and a club gig
you can get away with the whole "artistic representation" thing with a club gig, however, with a mobile gig you HAVE to play what the crowd wants... ex. top 40 from both today and years past like disco and classic rock, it's all top 40
i've done mobile and club gigs for the past 9 years, if you need more help PM me |

If I have to play only top 40 I probably won't be interested in repeat gigs, so I guess it will work itself out. ;)

Will keep that in mind, thanks :) |

I get what you're saying and would do exactly the same if I had to play.
I would however have the whole top 40 thing covered as well as whenever you drop one of those tunes the reaction you get from the crowd kind of makes you want to keep playing cheesy tunes as you can see everyone's having fun and that's the aim of the game..
Have fun though either way, and lay one of the chicks in there! haha |
