Thanks, guys.

Friday nght was really bad, even up here (I live in The Woodlands). I boarded up all the windows with particle board, & it even ripped two of those off. My neighbor across the street has 3 giant pine trees down in his backyard (one from his yard, one from his nextdoor neighbor's, and one from the house two doors down & one over...it just got uprooted & flew).

My house is fine, water pressure's come back close to normal, but still no power. They're estimating 2-4 weeks before it's back. Still over 2,000,000 people without power. Dowtown is just covered in glass from the buildings, the coastal cities are basically part of the gulf now, and there's flooding throughout, because we got another big storm saturday night. A lot of the South & Eastern parts of the area still don't have water at all.

There are dusk to dawn curfews in effect, but you'd have to be a moran to try to drive at night. There are trees & power lines down EVERYWHERE, and no traffic lights. There are also alligators, fish, and boats on the highways near the city...yes, boats.

Grocery stores are starting to open, and it's kinda scary. Even up here, there's no bread, no produce, no ice, and almost no canned goods at most places. All of them have 30-60 minute lines to get in. I happened to get to a Kroger that had just opened, so I stocked up like mad, but I'm sure that's the exception.

Damn, David, I can't imagine what that's like. 2-4 weeks without power? :wtf:

Clearly growing up in the Midwest have no idea the extent to which hurricanes can damage power grids, but that seems like a long, long time.

Also, where/what are you posting from? Are you planning on just sticking around, or getting out for a while?

Whatever happens, I really hope you're doing alright down there and that early estimates on recovery time are just that: estimates, and that things can get back to normal relatively sooner than you expect. Keep us updated.

:)

Damn, bro. Glad to hear it's at least livable. Best wishes to everybody down there!

I'm posting from my phone. It can't call or text for the life of it, but I can get online after a long wait. I'm using the cars as giant generators to re-charge it.

By the way, Sushi, it's mostly water damage south of downtown and out East, but we had sustained 50-100 mph winds across the area (about 60 up here with 70-100 mph gusts), which is what's causing all the power outages, because of all the power lines blown over or split in pieces.

Fortunately, there's a cold front on the way in, so only highs in the low-mid 80s later in the week. I've actually left the boards on the windows to stop the sunlight from getting in & heating the air in the house. It's not too bad, tbh. Boredom & cold water are my biggest issues right now, but a lot of people have lost a lot & till have it really bad. I'm not complaining.

btw, all the txtas have been accounted for afaik. it'll be a while before I'm back on, 'cuz I don't want to risk running out 'til I know I can get more gas. Both tanks are almost full, but still. It's too scarce atm to plow through batteries non-stop.

p.s. It's a Maxell image, not Pioneer. Shame, though, still.

Wow, same thing happened to us with Wilma in 2005. Downtown was a mess. Glass everywhere. 98% of South and Central florida had no power. It was crazy. Glad to know you're doing okay though :)

hope you keep your chin up, and things running post hurricane. they always say the hardest part is the cleaning up and regrouping, not living through the hurricane.

Kroger was expecting the situation to be absolutely ty. I work for a PNW chain of stores that is Kroger-owned, and four or five days ago my assistant manager was told that he'd be getting shipped out to Texas to help with a lot of the cleanup in an effort to get all of the stores back together. I guess they're bringing out a lot of extra people from stores all over the country.
