rap vs. hip hop??

i've noticed that a number of people on these forums don't enjoy listening to rap music (i.e. commercial rap such as Puff Daddy, Nelly, Cash Money...)
As well as being into trance, I've been a huge fan of underground hip hop for a while now. The lyrics are a lot more poetic and the beats are more unique...and I wondered what you all thought of (real hip hop) groups/artists such as Atmosphere, Eyedea, Aesop Rock, Company Flow, Sage Francis, etc... |

I dislike all forms of rap intensely. RnB just doesnt blow my skirt up. The messages are many times fairly good, and the beat is good, but the whole way the music progresses, and the over all accompaniment is usually trying to be too "smooth" and cool. This is coming from someone who believes the golden era of music is the 50-70s. I just dont think the messages are AS good, or the music AS well made. Its hard to not compare them to other stuff you like, but it isnt that I hate RnB and underground, I just like other things enough to where I would never get around to listening to it.
note: Rap is good for drinking, because then you arent listening to it and it has good base. |

I'm not a big fan of Rap at all. I hate the commercialism (sp?) of Rap, and it's content is pretty much the same recycled crap.
Hip-Hop on the other hand has a better feel. I'm not a big fan of either but can get into Hip-Hop more. I break dance, so I learned to like hip-hop alot. Hip-hop usually has a good beat, but it's mood is more of my liking.

i am still a huge fan of rap..but i dont know of ANY of those artist's names u threw out koop! lol im a HUGE fan of Outkast...always have been, they are my absolute favorite. their latest album was sort of weak but im talking about thier older stuff like ATLiens and Aquemini. they have a really unique sound in their music and the lyrics are always dope. they dont rap about the usual "money and hoes". i was also a huge fan of Wu Tang. i have all their cds starting from 36 chambers. i dont really listen to them that much any more but like once in a while i'll get in a rap mood and i'll throw one of those cds in...let's see who else? oh ya A Tribe Called Quest (mainly that one song "Once Again") and of course the legend Tu Pac. i was mainly a fan of Tu Pac when i was in 9th and 10th grade when that double cd came out "all eyes on me". i liked his lyrics so much cuz he was so intense and always impressed me w/ his beats and sounds. i never cared for biggie though...maybe like 2 of his songs. i guess this explains why i LOVE break beats. lol anything with a catchy beat and bass gets me going;)
oh yea and uhh, im a closet RKelly fan (i have all his cds but dont listen to him that much any more) shhhhhh! |

I think underground rap/hiphop is alright, just for alittle variety. Good for playing basketball to :D
and Run DMC "it's like that" is the greatest track :stongue: |

Slylee...if you want to here some really dope lyrics, download any of the songs off the Atmosphere: Lucy Ford album (ex: Woman with the tattooed hand, Guns and Cigarettes)..

They way i look at is this... Underground Hip-Hop is the only thing keeping the music from dieing, Commercial rap is the biggest disease to it.... Underground hip-hip is the life support, i still listen to hip-hop.... El-P (of Co-Flow) is the ing King and i still think his verse from "Population Control" from 1997, is still un-matched. If he put that out today, it's still better then anything out there now.... and he knew it too when he did it even saying "I don't try to be different, I Am / So therefore, my style will survive while your now turns to then". His new lp "Fantastic Damage" is great stuff too... with "Stepfather Factory", and "TOJ" being my favs.
I just wish more emcee's would focus on trying to better then anyone out there, instead of trying to be or sound like someone else. The idea is to make the music progess and evole and not have it stay in neutral position like commercial rap does. Despite what people want to say Tupac and Biggie Smalls were never anything special. When i listen to Hip-hop i can only listen to a few certain groups because i just feel that most of the artist's out there, are too simple...
El-P, Copywrite (and the rest of the MHZ, and Weathermen), Cage, Necro, Aesop Rock, and few more people then that are the only pure heads left in the scene, that are making a solid effort at progressing the scene. |

I like hip hop and old school rap.
Artists i like and still listen to are people like 2pac, Naughty By Nature, Biggy, most of the old deathrow people, Nas, Tribe called Quest, Blackalicious, THe Roots, J5, Dilated Peoples, Hieroglyphics, Snoop, Dre, Method Man, Wutang, Raekwon etc. Most of these guys were real popular around the early 90s. I'm not sure if any of them are underground, but that's what i spin and like. |

| I listen to a lot of underground hip-hop, which is real popular here in L.A. However the only comercial rap artist i really like is Nas his new cd has some powerful lyrics. However I absolutly hate some rappers especially Ja Rule. Hes so bad it makes me want to cry. |
