I've restarted this Vista Business SP1 x64 more times in the last three days (since I got the laptop) than I have my Mac in two years.

Windows sta is what I say.

Specs and brand of the laptop? You're doing something really wrong if you have to restart all the time. Really, really wrong.

Wrong? I've barely used it, how can I do that wrong. I've barely made it work, unless you call the screen saver coming on, doing a HD backup or MSN 'work'.

I got a Dell Lat. E6500 with 8GB and a Intel T9400 2.53.

Overall, not impressed, makes me appreciate my Mac that much more. Unfortunately, they don't make 8GB MacBooks yet, and I couldn't wait any longer (not to mention, I'm sure they will be pricey when they come out).

Does it have an nVidia graphics chip? If so, nVidia's ty drivers are probably what's causing the crashes. They amount for about 30% of what's wrong with Vista.

It isn't Vista that's crashing, it's some third party driver or piece of software that is doing it. Vista doesn't just up and crash like that.

Can you back this up? I'm just curious - I'm considering Vista on this machine and it's got an nVidia card in it. Both my computers do actually, it's hard to find silent ATIs.

As to the rest: people will always blame crashes on the operating system, even though it's been shown that something like 1% of all crashes are actually due to OS issues (the majority being driver problems and the rest being mostly attributable to malware). I don't think that's ever going to change. All we can do is try to force manufacturers to release better drivers, but of course everybody freaks out screaming "anti-trust!" when Microsoft tries something like driver verification and charges a pittance for it to prevent those s from surreptitiously outsourcing their testing.

Something is wrong with your machine or drivers or setup or some software package you're running.

Ultimate x64 has been stable as can be (and damn quick).

Lightroom 2 and Photoshop CS3 have been running really smoothly on my Vista 64 box!!

I'm really happy with it.

I got a blue screen of death but thats because of a driver that i got rid of.

Well, considering this laptop is brand new and I've barely used it, malware is out of the question, misconfiguration? If so, then it came that way from Dell, bad driver? The NVidia thing makes SOME sense because my screen saver once it kicks in and is displaying the 'Aurora' screen saver, the machine freezes completely.

I'm contemplating installing XP x64.

My bet is that you have bad hardware, most probably a bad memory chip in your video card or the main ram (if it's shared).

Send it back or simply return and get a new one if you just got it.

Hahahhahahaha jesus sweet don't do that if you value your sanity. Vista 64-bit is a goddamn walk in the park compared to XP 64-bit for basically every type of software support.

Return that machine and get the same config but with the Intel GMA4500MHD instead of that Quadro. I bet it is nVidia's half-assed drivers.

Happily returning my PC. I'll pickup a new MacBook this month after they announce the new ones on Tuesday. :p
