Biden: Paying higher taxes patriotic

WASHINGTON - Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans. In a new TV ad that repeats widely debunked claims about the Democratic tax plan, the Republican campaign calls Obama's tax increases "painful."

Under the economic plan proposed by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, people earning more than $250,000 a year would pay more in taxes while those earning less — the vast majority of American taxpayers — would receive a tax cut.

Although Republican John McCain claims that Obama would raise taxes, the independent Tax Policy Center and other groups conclude that four out of five U.S. households would receive tax cuts under Obama's proposals.

"We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people," Biden said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."

Noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more, Biden said: "It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."

McCain released a television ad Thursday charging that Obama would increase the size of the federal government amid an economic crisis. Contending that "a big government casts a big shadow on us all," the ad features the image of a shadow slowly covering a sleeping baby as a narrator misstates the reach of the Obama tax proposal.

"Obama and his liberal congressional allies want a massive government, billions in spending increases, wasteful pork," the ad says. "And we would pay — painful income taxes, skyrocketing taxes on life savings, electricity and home heating oil. Can your family afford that?"

The McCain campaign said the ad is set to run nationally.

All of a sudden earning an income of 250K+ /year is considered being wealthy to the far left

Of course, what are those two elitist's out of touch with the common man thinking. 250k a year is basically living on welfare. I dont know how those poor souls survive on such a measly inconme.

Unbelievable. Biden is the gift that keeps on giving. Blaming the economic mess is like blaming your doctor’s Mercedes for the broken arm you got playing soccer. Tax policy had nothing to do with the credit crisis. They are two completely separate issues. The government did not underregulate the credit industry from a lack of necessary funding, and in any case, the tax cuts produced higher revenues for Washington, not lower revenues. The credit crisis came from bad lending decisions pushed by government mandates, and a lack of oversight driven by lobbyist-fed laziness.

Who were two of the CEOs who got big bailout packages from the Fannie/Freddie GSEs? Jim Johnson and Franklin Raines. Which candidate has them as advisers to his campaign? Obama. Now Biden wants to tell us that paying higher taxes is patriotic. You know what would be patriotic? People like Obama and Joe Biden attacking government spending, not trying to beef up government revenues by attacking capital needed for investment.

I don't think that's a very "sudden" development at all.

Wow, he must be giving to your cause in very small print, because I couldn't quite read any of that between the lines of what he actually said.

Question for you hardline conservatives...

How does a country pay for a war without raising taxes?

What Biden is trying to do is create resentment towards the 250k+ individuals with those earning less. I mean... every American works hard for what they earn. Some earn more than others. Thats life! But the notion that you earn 250K+ up is considered "wealthy" by the far left, i totally disagree on. IMO that is not a lot of money. In my opinion, these individuals can 1. be in good financial standing 2. drive a nice car & own a nice house 3. take a couple of vacations with their families 3. pay the tuition for a good school for their kids 4. have a good health insurance 5. be left with some money to have some investments aside

To me thats a normal life  Its not like these people own private compounds or private jets and so on... To me personally being wealthy falls under the cat of earning 5m+

So in reality what the far left wants to do is tax even more that avergae American. that is unnaceptable and we must stop it

To put things in perspective, 250k will get you a very nice, brand new Ferrari. Are you seriously making the point that an average american can earn enough for a brand new Ferrari in a year? , i was thinking that our economy here in Europe was doing rather well, but we are till far far off from the point where an average European will earn as much as a new Ferrari costs in a year. In Europe at least, the general consensus is that people who earn that much money per year are rather wealthy, but hey i didn't know that an average americam was somewhat 10 times better off than an average European.
