I have 2 announcements:
1. Beginning of next year I will post all the gathering details for the famous TA TE Gathering on Friday and Saturday :toocool:
2. I'm going to make 2 special mixes. One is a Luminosity Be4 The Energy special mix, the other one is a Trance Energy Special mix.
Will post them here. So you can all prepare for 2 massive parties coming up in March. |

Here are some tips that I discovered recently, might come in useful for anyone going to TE 2009:
1) If buying tickets at TicketOnline.nl, there's an option to buy ticket cancellation insurance for EUR 2,50 extra per ticket. No terms and conditions were listed though. Has anyone ever used this service, and if so, was it "your money back, no questions asked?"
2) In addition to the cancellation insurance, TicketOnline also now offers a "ticket" for a locker in advance. There are thousands of lockers at Jaarbeurs Utrecht where you can store jackets, etc. This is a great way to ensure that you have a locker upon arrival, and the cost online is only EUR 11,00 plus a small booking fee (50 cents, I believe). This also includes the deposit, which you get back when returning the locker key, so the locker costs only EUR 5,00 or 6,00!
3) If anyone is looking for SIM cards to use with their unlocked GSM phones, the Lebara card is such a great deal!
http://www.lebara-mobile.nl/nl/prepaid/ Notice the "English" button in the upper right if you don't understand Dutch (or you can always translate and learn some! :) ) My SIM card was EUR 10,00 and that included 7,50 of talk time. You can find Lebara SIM cards at most mobile phone and electronics stores, and the top off cards are available at convenience stores, the Free Record Shop, grocery stores and even the post office. If the card is not used after 90 days, they do charge a 58 cent maintenance fee per month until the balance is zero, so I wouldn't put a lot of money on it that you don't plan to use, however.
I used it last year and made calls back to the USA for 9 Euro cents/min to land lines and 12 cents/min to mobile phones. Now they are doubling all credit, so if you buy EUR 10,00 you get EUR 20,00! That takes the rate down to 4.5 cents/min to the USA, no strings attached! Total cost for all of my calls and hundreds of text messages (very useful while at Trance Energy) was EUR 30,00 for my 9 day trip including the initial card...now it will be half that with the double rate credit.
Calls within NL are effectively 9 cents/min with the double credit, and this part blew me away: Lebara-to-Lebara calls within NL are FREE for the first 40 minutes with only an 18 cent connection charge per call!!!
btw, I have no stock in Lebara, and do not work there or anything like that. Just passing along what I believe is the world's best deal in SIM cards. Calling the US while on the train in the Netherlands at 9 cents/min was fantastic, and now it's so much cheaper. I just have to laugh at all those people who are calling back using AT&T for $2 a minute!
Unfortunately, I do not know at this point whether I'll be going to TE 2009. Due to my schedule at work, the earliest I could fly out would be Thursday 5 March, which would get me there on Friday. The jet lag is worst the first 3 days in my experience, so hope I could stay up for it. I'm still monitoring the non-stop flights from LA though, best fare I found this week was $790RT (I only go non-stop now after waiting 5 hours in Dulles once due to bad weather on a 2-leg flight). I'm considering buying to tickets to TE 2009 anyway along with the cancellation insurance, then would only be out EUR 5,00 if I couldn't go...but I'm not sure how good that insurance is (would I have to pick up my refund in person in Amsterdam, for instance? lol)
Anyway if it does work out, hope to see you there, and I also hope that these tips are useful either way! :D |

Ambien is your friend for the plane trip ;) and once you get to Amsterdam stay up no later than 11pm. The next day you should get up early 6-7am(NL time) have a big meal to start the day and around 3-4pm take a 1hr power nap. After this your clock should be set to party on NL time.
Thats how I've been doing it for yrs. |

ive got a blackberry world phone on the verizon network which does not use sim cards. it does however have an international sim card that allows it to work overseas, though it cost per minute. will a prepaid sim card work in the place of the international card? |

I believe that Verizon is still on the CDMA network. Europe uses GSM, so your phone would only work internationally in countries that use CDMA. If it did work though, you would need to check and see if your phone is locked. "Locked" means that the carrier has a software control in place that prevents you from using other SIM cards. It can be overriden by the consumer (usually with some help online or from a store that does this kind of thing), but the carrier usually claims that it will void your warranty.
I was previously on Sprint, but now I have an iPhone on AT&T. My solution was to buy an unlocked GSM phone (Siemens A70) for use while I'm in Europe. Google search "unlocked GSM phone" and you'll get tons of options.
So, depends on how much you plan to use the phone. My friend from NL came to the US once and was sure his GSM phone would work perfectly here. He actually had a lot of trouble using it, and then got a $145 bill for a half hour worth of phone calls to NL!
There's also a thread from last year with more info. on this topic:

And this article from About.com has some great detailed info. and links to unlocked phone sellers:

| Yeah, that's the great thing about Holland...I gave the guy at the store 10 Euros and walked out with my new SIM card and phone number in less than 10 seconds. Got one in Germany and had to go back to my hotel to get my passport, since they take your passport number, name, local address, etc. and register it into a database! |
