unless you absolutely need surround sound, id say forget computer speaker systems
look at some powered studio monitors, such as the m-audio bx8a . sound fantastic, and theyd serve you well for djing and production too :thepirate |

surround sound is really over rated imo. we just spent about 1.2k on a 6.1 setup and i'm really not very impressed. don't get me wrong, it sounds great, but the surround channels really don't add much... truth be told, i actually prefer running it in stereo. i hate it how voice always comes from the center channel.
if i knew it was going to be like this, i would have just got two big 8" speakers and a 10-12" sub. |

I have my 2.1 hooked up with a pioneer 5.1 for my note book. I think surround sound days are over, with all these new built-in equalizers these days. Possibly if I'm watching a movie though. Or else is custom for me.
I think a decent powerful 5.1 will own any computer right there!
Too bad we only have two ears. |

regarding comp 5.1 speakers, i can't remember the name but in an interview clip on youtube BT mentioned this one brand he used to mix This Binary Universe. I would listen to him when it comes to surround sound haha.
Furthermore, listening to movies and music properly mixed in 5.1 is superior to stereo. I point to BT's TBU on dvd compared to the cd.
I do find anything more than 5.1 to be excessive and inconvenient since few people have that much space in any one room to properly place that much equipment. |

yep.
it was the cheapest surround setup i could find with HDMI. not the best system in the world, but for the same price i could have got a really good stereo setup. i'm not seeing much benefit at all from surround sound. tbh, i can't even tell the difference, except that voices come from straight infront of me, rather than in stereo. we have a really large lounge room and everything is positioned as it should be too.

ew. no wonder.
you really need to spend at least 2 or 3 grand to get a decent 5.1 system w/ a receiver. |
