hey i just started working out too...i have a thin curvy physique so i look like im in shape but im really not..im just thin. basically i just want to tone my body. mainly from my knees up to my upper stomach...and arms a little too but not too much. i want to add a LITTLE meat before i tone though...my ideal body would be britney spears...omg she has the most beautiful curvy figure and she is really toned. anyway i've been doing some crunches, situps and squats...what else can i do?? im gonna join my dad's gym also next week. PLEASE dont tell me to do ANY cardio work outs..ugghh i'll pass out and die! lol

and btw u guys should get over that whole juice monkey look. i dont really like big muscley dudes, they just dont do it for me...but it's all about preference i guess. i go to south beach or ft.lauderdale and all i see are these perfectly ripped huge dudes w/ spikey hair and earings...they are a dime a dozen in my opinion. usually dumb as doorknobs too. i was always attracted to taller, thin looking guys;) *thin but somewhat cut* but that's just me....

Good way to tone up is by swimming, and walking. Also low wights, and high reps. Remember women dont bulk they tone :)

So anything well make you tone.

Good luck. I swim, which gives u good stomach muscles.

But getting one of those sit up things is good as well, and just some low weights, that you can just pic up and do, like when you r sat at the comp talkin to us lot :)

I think swimming is bad. I swam a lot for 15 years and it ruined my skin, hair and posture. It built up the muscles in my shoulders unevenly so I have terrible posture and permanent knots in my back.

If you want stomack muscles, do some ab workouts.

For cardio, how about dancing 6 hours or so on weekends?;)

Hey I have been working out somewhat for the past few months, and I have some questions:

1) Does your diet help alot in gaining muscles? I have heard if you eat tons of eggs and meat and stuff, instead of carbs, you can gain musceles alot faster, is this true?

2) I dont have access to a gym that frequently, and I need something to work my abs at home.. I used to do normal crunches or whatever you call them (like situps, but to your knees) but they seemed to loose effectiveness and I had to do too many.. so recently I have been holding a 15 pound weight to my chest while I do them to add resistence, and It seems to be alot more effective. Am I somehow damaging myself, or is this safe??

thanks for any help

I heard working out and doing weights shrinks your nuts :nervous: Thats why i stopped a few months ago. I also noticed that doing weights really makes your body feel heavier, the only disadvantage is that djing for long periods hurt my feet after working out, especially since im flatfooted :(

abs are easy to work on away from the gym but i don't know if i could describe a good detailed ab workout online. when you do crunches, start with your lower abs fisrt and work up to get the max workout. You should def try to work the whole muscle group by doing a variety of exercises.

i usually do 6 to 8 sets of 25 crunches, with each set working a different muscle. then i'll do 3 sets of 15 reverse leg lifts, where your body is laying at an incline and you lift your legs high and then lower them SLOWLY. This will give much better effects than regular leg lifts. I do some other stuff too.

There is nothing wrong with using weights to work your abs but you also need to work your back then to compliment the muscles you are building in your abs. And as mentioned earlier in this thread, you need to be sure you are using correct form when using freeweights. You don't want to develop lower back problems.

Crunches hurt my back, is there anything i can do to not hurt my back while crunching?

try laying flat on your back and put your hands down flat on the floor next to you....lift your legs (legs together) like 6 inches off the ground...then lift them up and down without ever letting them touch the ground....THAT is a true ab work out..my soccer coach in high school made us do those bitches and it works:)

Protein is the key to muscle building. Anything like beans and meats contains protein. Ideally, you want whey protein since it is the easiest for your body to break down into amino acids and reuse. GNC sells that in powdered form. Also remember to let your muscle group rest for 48 hours before working it out again. 48 hours is the usual time for your muscles to rebuild.

In stomach exercises and all other ones for that matter, form is most important. Try to use as much abs as possible and less feet or back. When done right, even basic crunches can be a work out. If that doesn't work, buy some weights you can tie around your wrists. Also, crunches are for your upper abs, remember to do your lower abs too.

everything that has been said so far in this thread is perfectly true, great advice...so yeah, to summarize:

1: form is king...
2: use free weights as much as you can, even my chiropractor (excellent, who is a former bodybuilder) recommends that, because u need strength to keep them stable as well. speaking of stability, try working out while sitting with a perfect posture on an anti-burst ball...sumthing like shoulder presses...i BET u won't be able to lift as much as u can when u normally do it! because u have to spend more energy balancing...it is really great, so yeah, even the ball is good
3: ALWAYS stretch! it makes u bigger, by keeping ur muscles loose
4: make sure u work ur legs, because if u wanna get bigger, u have to work them
5: lower back and ab exrecises are also a must, in the long run they'll help prevent injury...
