Since people tend to think it's a trance vs. house war...

| I'd like to say that I listened to Mark Norman's new track "Restart" today, and definitely was reminded of the old days when I was crazy about them. It's much more like their classic sound than the commercial stuff they have recently been making. I have at home at least 2 records of them (Phantom Manor/Rush, Stream/Shine/Overkill), and in fact the majority of my record crate is trance. So to all the people who have made the transition from trance to house, what did you used to like? |

I'm a still a fan of trance but I'm starting to enjoy house a lot more than trance...My record crate is still full of trance also. When I first started, I'm only about trance and nothing else. I couldn't stand house or other genre !!
Now days, I'm just a lot more open to other genre of EDM instead of being stuck on trance only!! |

| I hate it when people generalize everything that is not trance as house..what the hell is house..there are tons of genres even though sometimes it is very difficult to make something fit into a specific genre..I think the main ones are techno, minimal, and progressive and electro...house is too vague. |

sorry... but minimal, progressive and electro are not major genres of edm. it's techno, trance, house, breaks, jungle/drum and bass, downtempo, and hardcore. check out http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ if you're confused.
tbh, i think people are too obsessed with categorizing music. i blame the british for their insufferable need to categorize everything. for they are the ones responsible for dividing house in prog house, minimal house, electro house, disco house, chicago house, etc etc. instead of house with electro sounds, it became electro house. huose with progressive layering of ideas became prog house. even in rock there is such categories as shoegazer rock, glam rock, punk rock, etc... blame the british!
personally, trance lost it for me when the creativity stopped and what came out was this strict formula of rigid structure and overused sounds. not every track needs a supersaw main riff! also, i love basslines and there is more room to be creative with basslines in house than trance. (has to do with the space inbetween kick drums, if anyone cares) |

I was just refering to the opposite of what you are saying..in that house is very different things..I don't care who is to blame for splitting the genre up but they are very distinct sounds now and you have to compare them seperately..I would never catagorize cheesy electro music with tech-house as all the same thing: "house"... |

Anyhow i dont enjoy trance anymore... i used to love the morillo style house (maybe i still do i just dont listen to it, but i am sure if i did i would like it) and also the old sander k. The new sander i dont like. Now i like more deep housy tracks and minimal. Techno (the really low bpm one and the high bpm one) |

Maybe I've just been under a rock, but there's no new, fresh sound coming out of trance. Not that I've heard in a long time... if I'm wrong, feel free to make some recommendations, but I have to agree now with my friends who say it all sounds the same.
... then we have house DJ's that seem to be able to encompass a signature sound while also always producing something new and differnt.
That's just my humble opinion. |

Yeah, I used to be all about the lazer/unicorn trance. I never really gave house a chance until I went to WMC. John Digweed, Eric Prydz, James Zabiela, etc got me into it. I could never understand minimal and techno until I experienced Hawtin live, and after that I was hooked.
So yeah, the epic commercial trance did get a little old after awhile, but it was actually experiencing what else was out there that made me stop liking it. I still listen to trance, although now its the more progressive and techy stuff that I like. I think I have a pretty well rounded taste in dance music. |

Both of you are right. In fact even the History of House on youtube says that the UK is responsible for mainstreaming EDM, thus separating into marketable categories.

Unfortunately no, I only got to see Prydz at the Radio 1 party. Looking back, I could shoot myself for not going. |
