so apparently last month pirates operating of the Horn of Africa saw an easy snatch in the Iranian freighter, MV Iran Deyanat. upon inspection of their loot they got sick and some died. the ship is still quarantined off the coast and we want to get our hands on it.

Would have been nice if the US-backed Ethopian invasion of Somalia never happened. The Islamic Courts Union had brought some semblance of order to Somalia, which currently, under the criminal puppet regime of Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, is so corrupt, it borders on anarchy. There were no pirates when the Islamic Courts ruled Mogadishu...

Yes it is true. The port of Magadishu was even opened when it had been closed for years. You've really got to understand that liberal democracy does not work in places like Somalia....You need to watch this...

Seriously, how can a port function if there are pirates everywhere...think about it...

Wait isnt Russia sending its ships to "fight piracy" in that region?why is the Russian getting invilved in this?

It seems to be that there is something big happening there and there is a media blackout on the situation.

:haha: Lol the Russian navy will go there having to be towed by another boat.

yes, the Russians are protecting their investments...or arms deals however you want to look at it. they operate seperately from the Coalition Naval contingent, because they're Russians.

a dozen of their T-72 MBT's going to Kenya were just hi-jacked too yesterday >link<

Eesh.

First of all, the area that the pirates are operating from was never under the control of the UIC, so that argument just doesn't hold any water whatsoever. The pirates are operating largely from Puntland and Somaliland, de facto independent states in the north of what was formerly known as Somalia. There is a legitimate argument to be made that international recognition of that fact would be the greatest way of combating increased piracy there, but I won't go there.

Second, you're turning a blind eye to the regional security implications had Ethiopia not acted last year. The UIC was funding terrorist operations in the Ogadan, and Ethiopia reacted - not a surprise at all. In addition, the opening of Mogadishu's port coincided with an increase in the illicit weapons trade there.

Who would buy weapons in Somalia? Well, Sudan for one. Terrorists for another.

You're viewing things in black and white terms when that isn't how the world works. Just because the UIC are despicable when it comes to governance or cooperation in the region does not mean that everyone is imposing democracy on Somalia.

The Islamists clearly are not the pirates friends...

Ethiopia supported the ICU's enemy, the Transitional Government (i.e. puppet regime). Was the ICU not allowed to fight back?

Its just a gesture of goodwill, and willingness to help. Russia isnt the only one who is sending a ship to patrol the area - Malaysia and France also are. And Russian ships arent as bad as you think. Not that I am comparing them to American ships, but you get the idea. There are plenty of Russian-manned cargo ships going through that area. Couple of the highjacked by the pirates ships had several Russians on them. Which is of concern to the Russian government. French experienced the same problem, and responded likewise.
