$849 is a lil pricey for HP i think.

That's why I wrote what I wrote. :) Prices in dollars will always be higher in Croatia compared to USA.

Also, the OP should note that the computer you listed above only has FreeDOS as the OS. Just making sure you're aware of that, if it would pose a problem.

I know. That's what I'm after because I'll put XP on it, I refuse to use Vista for now. :p And it makes the price higher.

Looks nice. Like you said, I can't comment on the price, but it looks good compared to most other laptops I've seen :)

Meh, I was going to post a similar thread yesterday, so I'll just hijack yours for a while, if you don't mind, Gauss :p

Haha, no problem. :) Because...

I've been thinking of buying a laptop, in order to study when I'm not at home (i.e. when I'm at uni). The thing is, I've got a desktop computer that does pretty much all I want from a computer... but, I can't take it for a walk with me :p

Anyone owns both a laptop and a desktop? Do you actually use both computers, or do you eventually ditch one after a while?

I've got a similar situation. :)
After buying a laptop, I'll have both desktop and laptop.
I'm also buying it for college, working in AutoCAD, C, maybe even taking notes during lectures.

Go with Toshiba or Dell. NEVER, under any circumstances buy Compaq.
I've seen 2 of those fuckers burst into flames. No kidding.

Both of those are quite pricey around here, especially Dell.
At least for what I'm looking for and price I'm willing to pay.
So far only HP has what I'm looking for and I've heard only good about it, so why the hell not. :)

wait for the asus s101. Its going to compete with the mac air at around 699-899 depends on configuration.

I've got no interest in "small" laptops. :p

The fact that you mentioned Dell shows your ignorance. All Dell has is their warranty, their customer service is a joke - you call them up, thinking your gonna speak to someone in English, but you get patched to someone in Pakistan and you have no ing clue what they are saying.

IBM and, I agree, Toshiba... are the solid choices for a laptop that isnt a Mac.

Since removing Vista from my HP, I've had no problems at all.

Installing XP was a ing nightmare though :nervous: Had to flash the BIOS and use an external floppy disk drive (remember those!?) with the CD/DVD drivers on it, just so it would read the XP CD and boot into the install process :wtf:

I wouldn't touch a Toshiba personally. Had quite a few problems with my last laptop which was a Toshiba. If I had the funds I'd definitely be going for a Macbook.

Yeah, ok, completely scratch my last reply.

My HP laptop has just itself. Nothing but a blank screen when I try and boot. Can't even get to BIOS.

Fucker.

I prefer desktops to laptops, but I do rate the Toshibas, Asus and Samsungs I've seen, no idea what models they were though.

Avoid Acer like the plague.

Out of curiosity... Why?

Because of ty service!

I'd go with a DELL! Depending what you wanna do. For Multimedia take a Studio Notebook and stick to the 3 years at home service if you don't want to send in your notebook in when something is wrong and wait for weeks till you get it back.
And by the way, 1440x900 on 17" sucks! Far too low resolution (I myself have 1680x1050 in 15,4" and that's perfect.

Depends where you are. They are pretty good in Australia and have a pretty decent rep. Then again, I am an XPS customer so I get priority service :D

Oh and yea, go with XP. Vista is still a bit buggy.

What?

1680x1050 is native for 22", text would be tiny on a 15" screen.

1440x900 is native for 17" widescreen, as 1280x1024 is for 4:3 17"
