I'd recommend going for either an audio card which you plug into your motherboard or getting a firewire card (cheap, but make sure its texas instruments chipset) and running a firewire interface off it. USB is OK, but its better to keep it free for mouse, keyboard, synths and what have you. Theres also not that many good USB interfaces around. Avoid M audio, EMU etc...

I was going to go for the "Fast track ultra", but if I should stay away from M - Audio, then what would you recommend? Also, would Dell be able to install one of these "texas instruments chipsets" for me? Thanks for the reply dude. :p

Wait, the TI chipset is integrated into the FW card, right? My bad...

Also, I just need to get clear a few things up here:

1. In order to control a FW Audio Interface, do I need a FW card? Or just a FW port? Or is the port on the card?

2. Does a Firewire card just plug into an available PCI slot? (I'd rather a ready built PC supporting this)

3. Do I need good Digital Audio Converters AND good Mic Preamps if I wish to record both Electric and Acoustic Guitar and also Vocals?

Sorry For all these questions again, hopefully I won't have to ask much more :P

Thanks in advance folks!

Yeah thats right, so most FW cards have a TI chipset, its just the most stable one out there. The others often cause problems with soundcards.
To connect a FW interface you need a card, you get the best performance out of TI chipsets, if your onboard FW isn't TI, you may need to buy a card to plug in your audio interface. Dell may be abl to install a FW card with a decent chipset, but I seem to remember that they're notorious for using dodgy FW cards.
Yes you just plug yout FW card into the PCI slot. Make sure you buy a computer with plenty of PCI slots.
Yes you need good ADAs and also good preamps, but some interfaces have both.
Sound cards have been mentioned already, by me and others, look at presonus, Echo, RME, MOTU for soundcard options. M audio has a bad reputation in terms of sound quality and reliablity.

Thanks man, that's cleared a lot of things up, appreciate it. This is the FW card I was recommended: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16815150094

One of the reviews stated that one guy wasn't able to load Win XP Pro with this card installed...Would the same thing happen if I was on Vista?

This is the computer I'm buying: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/p..._410&l=en&s=bsd

It has (1) PCIe x16, (2) PCIe x1, (3)PCI. I take it that will be enough?

Thanks in advance!

The system seems to be good enough. But it seems there already is a FW option on board (IEEE 1394 Adapter = FireWire). So you probably don't need another FW-card.
And if you want to buy a seperate FW-card, why such a damn expensive on. You can get decent FW-cards for under 20USD.

Great! Thanks very much man. Also, I have a question about "Screen monitors"... My computer is fairly old (at least 6 years), The brand of the computer is "Time computers" and apparently they don't even exist anymore... So, will I be able to plug my old screen into this new setup I was looking at? Thanks in advance!!

:D

you really need to look at the plug that connects the monitor to your computer now... you're new comp would probably have the same plug on it as monitor connectors are universal (not different for each brand)...

otherwise it might be time to update the monitor anyways if it's THAT old :p

Yep, theres lots of inexpensive FW cars which will do the trick.
Find out if the inbuilt one is OK first, give it a try and check whether it works with your gear. You might be lucky.

I would like an FW car. How much do they cost?

Ohhh, I had no idea that was FW. Thats even better then :P Would I have to contact Dell to find out if it had a TI chipset? As kit says though, Dell are known for dodgey cards. Suppose I could always buy a new one anyway. Thanks for you help man. :)

Just try it and if it doesn't work properly then start looking for a firewire card with Texas Instruments chips. You really can't go wrong this way, you avoid unnecessary spending :). It might take some time to get the FW card if the one the pc has doesn't work properly.

My card (Echo Audiofire 12) works great on a non-TI chipset card though. :)
