I'd have to say that file sharing and mp3's in general are great.
If I hadn't have heard a marco v set that was posted on this site many months ago then I wouldn't have taken an interest in his music, go and see him live and buy his vinyl.
Its the same with Tiesto. I've heard a lot of his stuff from MP3's and i'll still go out and buy it because it's good. If I dont like it I wont buy it.
The artist isn't really going to loose out. I would have heard it on the radio, on a mix cd and decided not to buy it anyway.
If these proper artists cared about the music they would welcome file sharing with open arms. It gets their music across to people who can't afford the CD's or can't get them due to where they live. If they don't care about the music then they shouldn't be in the buisness in the first place. |

| Maybe since Metallica isn't making good music anymore they think that it might be fun to not let people download it anymore so they sure Napster. Now MP3's are real controversial although most of the popular and good artists back MP3s up, especially DJ's. I think they're great though :D |

i think its amazing how all you ever hear about the internet is stopping MP3 traders and the such and how they can stop all the sharing of music...but NOWHERE NEAR as much do you hear about people trying to stop all the weirdo kiddy porn traders...those are the real criminals and the people who should be stopped...not us...
its sad...more people try and stop MP3s then kiddy porn...just shows us that big buisness is more importnat then the welfare and protection of out children....very sad and disturbing to me. |
thats cuz the RIAA don't lose money from kiddy porn.

I've been thinking that since the days of Napster. Why not just move AG Sattelite to somewhere outside of America and other places with laws against spreading copyrighten music. |

all of james holden songs are blocked on ag, yet his releases have not been available on cd ( am I wrong about that ? ) + he 's "underground" .......
and he says he downloads sets and online !?
hummm we have to not forget that some artists, big, sometimes small, are "run" or their authority is taken by the record label which effectevly has the right to demand a donwload block on copyrighted music,
their artists are their money and they feel like blocking because that's a threat to cd sales....
the deal is ... labels make the most money off cd sales ( most of the cd money goes to them ) but the artists only get a small percentage ( which becomes real money to the artists only when they start selling tons of cds )and make most of their money ( well either it's extra money or just the main way to make money ) by touring cause playing one evening making a couple thousands bucks is better then struggling to sell a couple thousands ( talking about small bands in particular )
but wait why am I talking about bands ,,,,, hahaha no one listens to rock and of the sort here ...lol j/k
I personnaly have loads of original cds ( over 200 ) but I also am an mp3 freak ( collection of 80 mp3 cdrs and growing ) .... I can't afford to buy all the stuff plus it's true that lots of it is not available at our local best buy and we don't feel like paying ridicuoulous over 20 dollars import cds when ordering online off cdnow groovetech amazon etc etc
it's weird ... basically everyone should do whatever they want ! !!! |

As much as they will try to stop free trading of mp3s over the internet, I see it as being impossible. As someone else mentioned, it will move from one form to the next, first there was ftp (which still exists and is probably impossible to control), then Napster, now AG (good ol' AG), and then we will all probably move to KMD, etc etc. It is impossible to stop.
If we think about it, of all the members on these forums, if only half bought the tracks that they d/l and liked, the record company would owe this site abundant gratitude. In a sense, it is like recording a songs off the radio to listen to in the car. But if people are d/l songs and using them to make a living, then that is a problem.
I'm especially thankful for sites like tranceAddict and services like AG because then I can avidly follow the trends in the rest of the world and pick the songs to look out for usually about a month in advance. This would be impossible seeing as we are at the ass end of the world.
Anyway... that's my 2 (AU) cents. |
