I am writing an anthropological research paper on people who listen to EDM. If you would kindly take part in this brief questionnaire it would be greatly appreciated. Please note that no real names will be used in my final paper. Please take this seriously and answer the questions completely if you choose to participate.
1. How many years have you listened to EDM?
2. Was there one event in particular which grabbed your attention and made you become a listener?
3. In what country/city/state were you born?
4. Do your parents listen to EDM?
5. What type of music were you exposed to as a child?
6. What is your highest level of education?
7. What is your occupation?
8. What genre of music did you listen to when you first began listening to EDM? Do you continue to listen to that same genre?
9. What genre(s) of music do you prefer now?
10. Are illegal or prescription drugs prevalent in the EDM community? If so which kind?
11. In your opinion, does EDM promote the use of drugs?
12. What is the farthest you have traveled to attend an event and what was your city of departure?
13. If there was one song you thought everyone should hear at least once, what would it be?
Please keep in mind that the information provided will only be used as a source for my paper and no real names will be used if quoted. Feel free to add any additional information that you feel will be an asset in conducting research.
When answering the survey please accompany your answers with the questions. Thank you! |

| What exactly is the purpose of this project? Just a general survey of a specific demographic, or is there an underlying thesis that this information will tie into? |

| The purpose is to study a group of people, any group of people. As a fan of EDM myself, I thought I would take a step back and look in as an outsider might. This research paper is to learn about the people, their lives, or anything that might be considered notable. I am taking an emic approach. |

1. How many years have you listened to EDM?
12ish?
2. Was there one event in particular which grabbed your attention and made you become a listener?
Not really, since I've listened to it most of my life... but the thing that allowed me to find more then just commercial house was really gatecrasher classics. All started from there.
3. In what country/city/state were you born?
Melbourne, Australia
4. Do your parents listen to EDM?
My dad listens to synth classical, oldschool ambient and classic trance occasionally (previously a lot more). My mum listens to some edm influenced stuff... and tribal ambient type stuff.
5. What type of music were you exposed to as a child?
My dads stuff mostly,
6. What is your highest level of education?
Year 8
7. What is your occupation?
School, haven't got a job yet.
8. What genre of music did you listen to when you first began listening to EDM? Do you continue to listen to that same genre?
Probably either my dads stuff, or commercial house.
Don't listen to commercial house anymore... but classic trance/ambient/synth classical most definitely.
9. What genre(s) of music do you prefer now?
Psy/goa trance, dnb, ambient mostly.
10. Are illegal or prescription drugs prevalent in the EDM community? If so which kind?
I think you know,
11. In your opinion, does EDM promote the use of drugs?
Yes, however I'll argue otherwise wherever possible if its in my best interests/interests of the community. Then again, rock and such promotes the use of speed and heroine and stuff, so at least edm is the softer drugs.
12. What is the farthest you have traveled to attend an event and what was your city of departure?
Only really been to one, probably about 40 kilometres
13. If there was one song you thought everyone should hear at least once, what would it be?
deadmau5 not exactly :gsmile:
Probably the entire the gathering album. Although that'd probably be at least 10x... since even the most musical of people take a few listens to get it, and its everyone we're talking here. |

Tech house, deep house and techno.
10. Are illegal or prescription drugs prevalent in the EDM community? If so which kind?
I'm not really into the EDM community here to have a relevant opinion. Alcohol is very easily obtainable and encouraged here though, and IMO tends to dominate over illegal drugs. Talk of EDM drugs in this board seems to be mostly ecstasy, cocaine and hashish.
11. In your opinion, does EDM promote the use of drugs?
Some of it does, yes. But it's entirely possible to enjoy it without them.
12. What is the farthest you have traveled to attend an event and what was your city of departure?
About 50km, which is the distance from my home to the island's main city. Which is the distance I do for everyday life anyway.
13. If there was one song you thought everyone should hear at least once, what would it be?
Aztec Mystic - Knights of the Jaguar |
