Must Have Refills

Hey guys. I recently bought a few new refill packs; Miroslav Refill: String Ensembles, Miroslav Refill: Choir, and Ultra Electronic Refill all made by Sonic Reality. i have to say that Ultra Electronic Refill was probably the worst refill i have ever bought or even downloaded for that matter. It's was recently made so i thought that it would have at least a few good super saws, trance basses, and pads, what i found was a bunch of chessy sounding synths. the were put in to groups and sub groups like drum n bass, house, breaks, trance, then in each folder you would have basses, leads, pads, fx... Anyway the trance refills were what i was after, the pads sounded like fx, and there wasn't one supersaw in there. Big disappointment, even the drum loops in there sound like they were made on a casio 10 years ago. By the sounds of the other folders i don't think the creaters had ever even listened to dance music. All in all the refill was pathetic.
So i'm still in search of some quility refills for trance, specifically upliftng and progressive trance. One refill that i bought over a year ago that i probably use the most is Digital Art Trance Station refill made by Sonic Flavours. I believe Icone had a hand in making this refill, it is quite good with lots of modules and combis, i think a must have for reason using trance producers.
I have also bought the Massive Progressive refill from that company and was happy with it, although i have bought some others from them that i thought weren't very good.
So what I want to know is what are your MUST HAVE reason refills?, and what kind of music are you producing with them?. Also if there are any refills to stay away from tell us what your experience was.
Thanks |

Why are you after supersaw samples? Thor can do any supersaw you'll ever need.. and remodelling them with a synth will be a lot warmer and more flexible than samples. In fact I think since reason 4, there's no more such a think like a "must have refill for trance".
subtraktor could do a semi-decent supersaw
malstrom could do a decent one
thor can do a 99% accurate supersaw (compared to jp8000)
If you don't believe this, you can A-B this sound to the "real-stuff". It's a lead I made some time ago to convince myself that reason sounds good enough to sell some hardware.
Anyway, I recently bought some good refills: reasonbanks analog monsters 3, and you can choose a free refill with it now with the special promotion (I chose analog night because the AN1X is one phat synth). You can also choose an access virus soundbank or any other commercial refill. These sounds are really good but not specifically trance oriented.
For the rest, you already discovered the sonic flavours stuff. I still have to buy some of their refills.
BTW, I think Digital Art just licenced some of Icone's samples. I don't think Icone was part of the designers.
Anyway, you do know that it is a piece of cake to make instruments in the reason sampler so if you like the trance station you could buy some of Icone's sample packs and create instruments. He has some instruments samples too I believe. |

You do know that most refills are all about samples?
The analog monsters refill is really timeless as it's all about vintage synths. Most of them are NN 19 patches, then some rex files, NNXT and combinators. They are professionally looped and some patches are very original and inspiring.
You can find some thor patches at this site : http://www.combinatorhq.com/
@ Steven: patch was build with a small mixer and 2 thors, 1 panned left, 1 right. |

| The snorting audio psy/(newschool) goa refill is actually pretty good. Leads/fx are kind've crap... but some absolutely great kicks and bass there, and lots of them. As well as some other percussion and stuff but really its easily worth it just for the kicks/bass... and I haven't fully explored it yet either, I'm sure I'll find some more other goodies in there too :) |

Here are 5 NN-XT Patches from my Refill. I'll be porting this to different sample formats.

I have over 20gb of refills, recently got most of those. I havent even gone through most of them. I find myself only ever using 1-2% of my refills even before I got the majority of them recently.
I find now I make the sound myself or the 1-2% that I use and I know are ok I tweak the sound to my taste.
Cant say which refills are must have sorry as I dont use them enough to remember, only one comes to mind thats ok is point2 point productions did a good one. But i would reccomend making you own. |
