hence why the gays are getting nothing. failure to compromise

IMO the difference in the term marriage and civil union is you say tomayto, i say tomahto... from non religious POV

why does it really matter to get in the religious folks face over a lousy term? if I was gay, I'd be happy with civil union which has same benefits as a marriage, and screw those religious wackos and their 'marriages'

Because of egos, a sense of inequality, etc. It's a minority fighting for their rights. Instead of creating something new(for a fairly new lifestyle), they try to fit into something that has existed for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

As far as I know, this has not had any impact on our society. It has not forced people to become gay, it has not ruined the fabric of time.

I am quite upset that the vote didn't go through in Califoria only months after it was allowed. Either have it or don't have it. Don't just with these people like that. Once the courts allowed it, they shouldn't have put it on the ballot.

Obviously gay marriage be allowed; that's simple equality. There's more than enough precedent along the lines of "equal but different is not equal". The only people who deny this are theists, traditionalists, and the like... those who form their beliefs based on emotion, coercion, authority, or dogma rather than sensible, cogent, logical arguments. I have very little to say to them.

The religious folks... well, they believe in magical beings and make decisions based on what they think the magical beings want; I'm not gonna be able to change their minds and I don't really care what they think, but I sure as hell don't want them writing my laws. There is a reason why matters of minority rights should never be left to public referendum.

IMO the best solution is for government to abolish all marriages and have civil unions for all (for taxation purposes and such). When you fill out your taxes, you're either in a civil union or you're single. There shouldn't be a checkbox for "marriage" in the first place. The application process and rights granted would be the same for any two people, regardless of sex and such. Let the churchies do whatever they want if they wanna glorify their unions through whatever god-pleasing rituals they deem appropriate. That doesn't bother me at all.

At the end of the day, the government shouldn't be publicly recognizing one union as being different from any other in any way. The US government lags behind the rest of the world tremendously in this matter, though. In the sixties, blacks and whites still couldn't get married in over a dozen states. It'll be a long time until the US catches up to Europe, Canada, and Japan in terms of civil rights because christianity runs so rampant there. It took you guys this long to elect a black president... it will probably be another century before you elect a nontheist president.

Of course the recent changes to marriage laws in Ontario have made a huge difference for gay people in Ontario. I don't know about the churchies; personally, I don't think they're losing sleep over it. Fortunately, we don't have as many of those as you guys do down in America, and ours are a hell of a lot less pissy than yours are. Most of our churchies are old people, and to a lesser extent, some kinds of immigrants; religion is far from mainstream. You guys in Cali still have MAJOR portions of your population which are heavily religious... you can blame the latinos (30+% of California's population) for prop 8 going through.

Simple solution would be to have marriages for heteros and civil unions for gays with equal rights and benefits for both.

Take away the religious reasons for objection. Everyone is happy

Or, just let them get Married, but allow Churches to deny the marriage if they wish, but still acknowledge it under state law in the legal sense of the word.
