The only things you should look for in a GF are:
1. No Kids
2. A Job
3. A Car |

rather than critiquing her for the stuff she doesn't know, although that stuff might be seen as basic, you should celebrate the stuff she does know. surely there are other things she knows. |
she obviously knew better than to sleep with him.:p

I donno, maybe my standards are too high, but if there's something that can turn me off it's shocking lack of knowledge in the most basic areas of culture, politics, religion etc.
In true Sarah Palin fashion my gf has lately revealed that
- she doesn't know that Muslims don't drink alcohol
- she has no idea who Alan Greenspan is (but studies economics)
- she doesn't know Goodfellas
- she doesn't know Dostjoewski
- she doesn't know the concept of "reverse pschology"
- she doesn't know the phenomenen of dowsing
|
my first true love was like this. she wwas absolutely wonderful.
people are all very different. i found it cute to teach her things. she taught me spanish and I introduced to her several other things. |

You know, I first heard this song in Russian. I had no idea it was a cover version until Madagascar (the cartoon) brought it back to fame. I still didn't know what the original version was until today.
I'm I'm gratekful for that :)

Nice :)
My main areas of interest are linguistic typology and functional grammar. Lately, I've been doing some research on Aktionsarten in Brazilian Japanese... but, because my tutor (?) is the only person in the whole faculty working under a functionalist perspective, I'm quite used to being among Generativists :D |
that's great. is your faculty comprised entirely of nativists/chomskyans or do you also have some connectionists? |

Pretty much everyone is a Chomskyan there, except for those whose work doesn't really make much sense within this paradigm (i.e. a couple of discourse analysts and a sociolinguist, who ironically is the most famous guy around :p). And, as I said, my tutor. It's not even funny :D
I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about connectionism here in Brazil. I know about it simply because I tend to read a little bit of everything... but, no, there are no connectionists around here.
What's your faculty like? |

| those professing computational linguistics and neural networking were all connectionists / empiricists. pretty much everyone else was a stalwart rationalist / nativist. they would constantly engage in heated (and sometimes violent) debates, calling each other intellectual frauds while shouting at the top of lungs and foaming at their mouths until one of them finally passed out. it was highly entertaining to watch - they hated each other with a passion. |

Sounds fun :D
I see we hijacked the thread... I'd better just reply to your PM tomorrow. It's past midnight, and I'm going to work tomorrow morning.
