Because we are taught to. As a social component, it is a ritual of mating we are taught by our parents, by people we observe growing up, by film and television - there is an industry testifying to the kiss as an acceptable form of affection in public places and with attached meanings.
As a physiological component, it is merely us utilizing our relatively 'open' orifice to assuage our mates with tactile sensation - not necessarily dissimilar to holding hands - the industry being a result of the physiology, as with most cases. As sexually prolific beings, we are prone to fits of affection, females more so - it is merely a physical faculty of our being programmed to reproduce, the same with a great many other things we do with regard to sexuality. |

Do monkeys kiss? I've never seen one kiss. Never seen any animal make out, ever.
I find it strange we humans feel the need to connect tongues with each other. My question is, why is this unique to humans? Why do we do it? |

| From what i see, a kiss is an understanding of an opening for an open (not in a swingers kinda way) relationship. |

So you're saying we learn to do it? Well, who were the first humans to do it, and why did humans subsequently copy off of them?:p |

The difference is that humans mate for pleasure and not always purpose. We evolved lips and other erogenous parts on our bodies to the point where it is more possible for us to derive pleasure from such tactile interactions and are thus spurred to mate, which from a biological standpoint, is a strong reasoning behind our proliferation and strength as a species. Most other animals simply do not mate for pleasure; in fact, many endangered species find intercourse quite distressing which explains why it is hard for them to cope after their numbers are threatened.
Humans also have a far more complex society than any other creature we know of - sexuality being a strong component of this society and thus something we pass on, behaviourally and biologically, from generation to generation. But the kiss must have started as merely an expression of our particularly developed bodies. |

Why do we humans kiss? No other mammal kisses during mating that I have seen. Do cats kiss when they touch noses, or are they just smelling each other? When a dog licks your hand, is it kissing you? Seems to me like kissing, specifically, making out, is a strictly human activity. Discuss? |
same like asking "why we wank?".. |
