Idealism and money

Would you give up an opportunity to get rich in order to pursue an ideal?

I've just found out I would. Better yet, I just did. I was offered a job in an international government agency where I'd earn 10x more than I do currently at university (the money would be more than enough to keep my current standards and visit a foreign country every month), and all I had to do was give up my current position as a lecturer and, possibly, my hopes of finishing grad school. All I had to do was show up there (I worked there for a while, and they had invited me before), and confirm to the person who had phoned me that I was interested, but I turned it down. This is not the first time I do this, but the salary had never been this high before.

Now, if you've got no goal in life other than making a living and having a comfortable life, this probably just sounds stupid and/or outlandish. But, if you've got a dream that is not directly related to financial wealth, would you swerve from your path in order to make some extra bucks?

(Out of curiosity, if you say you would, could you also post your birthday? :p)

Cha, ha, ha
We need some more lovin' now
Not money (ooh, na, na, na, na)
It's the most thing that do us part
We shall do bury it, yeah
Beanie Man and Jamelia (na, na, na)
Jamaica, na, na
Dagga, dagga, da
Dagga, dagga

(Chorus) Money don't say you love me
Cash won't make me stay
I came here with my own things
And I can leave the same way
And if you really cared, babe
You would spare your time (yagga, yagga, ya)
If you don't understand (woah)
You can't afford mine (can ya sing it?), no

Ain't a prima donna
So I can't fall in love with material things (oh)
You need to offer
More than chains and diamond rings
I need to know that
There's a place for me deep in your heart
I don't give a damn (nah)
About your credit cards (so ya sing)

(Repeat chorus)

I must admit it
I was fine with your talk
And your gifts in the start (check it out)
Now all that's wanted
Is to know I got your heart
I have no idea (cha)
About where this is gonna go (yes)
I don't really care (oh, I) for your amount of dough (so, ah)

(Repeat chorus)

So you think I've got a price tag on me
Just a flash of the cash and you're all I see (all I see)
Well, let me tell you (tell you) something
You couldn't be more wrong about me (oh)
All your fancy cars, they just don't turn me on (turn me on)
You got me wrong
Make all the money (money that you can) that you can
'Cos money don't make a good man

Isn't a lie
Will be your one and only
Promise promise
Money never get you crazy, yeah
I know you flexing with some friend
Whatta you sing, say
Money don't buy my love)
Gotta me security
Love are me only surety because
(Money can't buy my love)
Lemme sing again
(Money can't buy my love)
Lemme sing, say
(Money can't buy my love)
C'mon, ya frighten off justa
The above look nice girl
(Money can't buy my love)
C'mon, all the hours for ya
And the Benz and all ya drive cars
(Money can't buy my love)
You are the perfect art
Me love you from start, girl
(Money can't buy my love)
Lemme sing again
(Money can't buy my love)

(Repeat chorus)
Money can't buy my love

Girl, you are the perfect art
S'why me love you from the start
Money can't buy my love (can't buy my love)
Not that, not that, no, no, no (money can't buy my love)
Can't buy my love
Don't give me your cash
My fees are yours
Money can't buy my love
Sing again
Money can't buy my love..

Sure; although the ideal I'm pursuing requires a lot of money, so...

In a single paragraph, I want to help humanity in the quest to understand what makes us human, and instill confidence in those who share a similar goal.

If I were offered a job where I could earn enough in a few years to live off of it in reasonable comfort for the rest of my life, I would. I hate the very idea of a job, working for someone else, having to arrange my time and habits to fit someone's demands. I'm not averse to effort or to being useful to other people, but I want that effort to be spent on things I love, which aren't very often things that earn money.

If I could make it so that I could spend all of my days how I pleased by earning a whole lot of money in a short stretch of time, I would do it, even if it required immense effort / tolerating stressful work conditions.

At least 4 out of 5 people working in my company have degrees unrelated to their jobs. My BSSc. is unrelated to my project manager/B2B e-procurement integrator job at HP.

I never got to pitch in the majors, but still pitching in a league every summer.

So we all have dreams we want to pursuit, but we have to make a good living, and that's reality.

You should have taken the job, build your wealth while pursuing your dream on the side until you can fiscally reach it.

Well I haven't turned down a good paying job, but someone could offer me one and I'd still tell em to screw off if it meant I had to move or work days.

I have a degree but I'll be working for the next 6 months in a big restaurant kitchen fro 12.50 and hour.... just enough for make it through each month....... but I'll be snowboarding almost every day for months!

what you didn't isn't that crazy. What's crazy is that our society usually thinks decisions like that are crazy.
