Yes and no.
They have an old Nikon SLR camera but stopped using it a few years ago. They have talked about getting one but didn't want to spend the money on this...but they are paying for me to go to Hawaii so I think an expensive present is in order. |

hmm. well if they already invested in a nikon system, they most likely have old lenses. i'm not sure about old lenses on new bodies though. you might want to ask about that from a store rep.
basically they won't be dissappointed with the d90. especially if they were already looking into it. |

Aight so heres the deal... I ended up getting the Nikon D60 with an 18-55mm lens as well as a 55-200mm lens for Christmas. I ended up exchanging (and paying a bit more) for a Canon Rebel XSi with a 18-200mm lens like someone mentioned before.
I also got a Sigma lens filter, Lowepro case, lens brush and a 16GB card in total. That should pretty much set me up for 2009 and forward. Hopefully by the end of the year I can grab a wideangle/fisheye lens which is what I really want.
I like the Canon a lot more than the Nikon... I only chose the Nikon cause my friend had one so it was an easy transition. The features are pretty much the same except I don't have to swap lenses on this camera, where the Nikon I had to interchange if I wanted to use the high zoom. All in all I paid almost double for the Canon but I love it better and I'm happy with all the accessories that I got for it. |

| I ended up going with a Nikon D60 and thus far, I'm right happy with the choice. I'm about to inherit an SB-600 Speedlight, 18-200 AF-S lens and one other one (can't remember off the top of my head, think it's a Tamron Lens) from a family member. I'm told that the 18-200 will replace my Kit 18-55 for daily usage and when coupled with a Speedlight I'm excited to learn some cool with this thing. :) |

the only fisheye lens on the market right now made for aps-c sensors is the tokina. i want that badly but im in the process of saving money for the canon 50d, canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM and canon 580ex. |

are you sure? i though the EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye was both wide angle and of course produces fisheye like photos...
its pretty pricey (around $8-900 however i found it on newegg for $724 CDN!) but then again its more visually pleasing in certain photos if shot correctly. i tried the nikkor fisheye at henrys and was in love with its usefulness.
the few problems i have read about with the canon EF fisheye are: it makes a really loud shutter sound and you can't put a lens filter on it because of the glass curvature protruding outward, which sets it up for being scratched if not careful.
i love my camera and loaded it up with all the accessories. im trying to find some good books that will teach me composition, use of light and just how to be creative while shooting. if anyone knows of any please post them up! |

go do some research on the various fisheye lenses.
the canon EF fisheye is made for full frame sensors.
the tokina is the only one designed for the aps-c (crop) sensors. |

check out the Peleng 8mm fisheye lens. results
books can only teach you so much. you have to go and actually shoot shoot shoot. that's the only way you'll get better. and experiement...that's the beauty of the digital age...the only limit is the size of you memory card.
i'd also suggest going on flickr and looking around to see what you like and then checking out the exif info for all the technical stuff. |

i totally forgot about the peleng. looks like a good lens judging by those sample shots. the only thing i dont like about the peleng is it is really freaking ugly looking.
edit: its about $500CAD to buy the peleng with shipping from ebay . i think id rather pay $560+tax for the tokina. |
